Sodje Okays Rohr’s Sacking ; Backs Eguaveon Appointment

Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje has supported the decision to sack Gernot Rohr and approved the appointment of Austine Eguaveon as new interim head coach of the team, reports Completesports.com.

The Nigeria Football Federation announced the sacking of Rohr on Sunday night.

“The relationship between the Nigeria Football Federation and Mr Rohr has come to an end. We thank him for his services to the Super Eagles and Nigeria,” general secretary of the NFF Mohammed Sanusi said in a statement.

“We also want to thank the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports for their collaboration and guidance all through.”

Eguavoen, a former Nigeria captain, who was coach of the squad when it finished in third place at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in 2006 will now lead the team to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

”It’s something we have to do. The people coming in know the players and where they are coming from. We just have to give them our support,”Sodje stated.

“Hopefully, things will end well at the end of the day.”

  • The Super Eagles is now temporarily managed by a team of coaches who are hungry to make an instant impact and success of upcoming assignments.

Some of them have silently prayed for this opportunity so it is for them not to screw it up.

The turbulent tenure of Gernot Rohr has finally come to an end and it is pure waste of time now to continually dwell on the past. The 67 year old German brought upliftment and much needed stability to the Super Eagles at a time of its lowest ebb between 2016 and 2019.

Sadly, after the renewal of his contract in 2020, the brand of football played by the Super Eagles became a most potent medicine for those people struggling with sleep deprivation: it was depressing, gimcrack, nugatory and ultimately downbeat. Despite hitting all his targets on paper, he missed the target of hearts in minds with displays that always left Super Eagles fans on tenterhooks and some needing anti-depressants.

Regardless, I will always remember Rohr’s first stint fondly with memorable matches against Argentina, Cameroon, Zambia, Algeria and England (second half). The Super Eagles were simply amazing to watch at that time and I always felt invested in their displays and was sold on the direction he was talking the Super Eagles. Shame he couldn’t carry that aura of invincibility into his second contract as the wheels came off beauty that accompanied the results he achieved prior.

Now, his Jekyll and Hyde chapter in Nigeria’s football has come to an end after weeks of speculations and subplots.

It is now time for Eguavoen and Co to put the “Super” back in our most loved and dearly cherished Super Eagles of Nigeria.

If I am Austine Eguavon I will employ the services of a white man as an assistant and watch all the current matches of Nigeria foes and my players individual performances in their various clubs to know the players to fitt in for a particular match

Those are areas where some indigenous coaches are lacking. Rohr hired a video analyst but indigenous coaches like Aigbogun and Ogunefon are not likely to think like that.. Rohr hired his own personal video analyst that he paid from his own pocket.
