Born on 28 April 1974 in Lagos, Funke Oshonaike’s table tennis career is among the longest and most remarkable sporting journeys by a Nigerian athlete.
From playing table tennis as a young girl in Lagos to becoming a three-time African singles champion, Nigerian champion and seven-time Olympian, her career has been built on discipline, sacrifice and an enduring love for the sport. Her seven Olympic appearances are perhaps the clearest symbol of her longevity.
But her legacy goes beyond the record. She has demonstrated that African athletes, and particularly women in sport, can compete at the highest level for decades when talent is combined with determination and resilience.
