Captain Troost-Ekong Retires

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from international football on the eve of AFCON 2025. The Al-Kholood centre-back confirmed his decision on Thursday, 4 December 2025, bringing the curtain down on a distinguished national team career.

Troost-Ekong earned 83 caps and scored eight goals for Nigeria over a 10-year international career that began in 2015. He featured in three AFCON tournaments — Egypt 2019, Cameroon 2021 and Côte d’Ivoire 2023 — winning bronze in 2019 and silver in 2023, where he was also named the tournament’s official MVP after scoring a record five goals for a defender.

Beyond AFCON, he represented Nigeria at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, helping the Olympic Eagles secure bronze, and also featured at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

2026 World Cup Qualifiers

The Super Eagles’ quest for Nigeria’s seventh FIFA World Cup appearance ultimately ended in disappointment despite a commanding 4–1 victory over Gabon in the African Playoff semi-final on 13 November 2025 in Rabat, Morocco. The three-time African champions advanced to the final but were defeated 3–4 on penalties by DR Congo after a 1–1 draw in regulation time, failing to qualify for the six-nation intercontinental playoffs where two 2026 FIFA World Cup slots are at stake.
