Tokyo 2020 Football: Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt Reach Quarter-finals; South Africa Crash Out

Cote d’Ivoire have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympic Games after a 1-1 draw against Germany in their final Group D clash on Wednesday.

The West African giants opened the scoring in the 67th minute thanks to an own goal by Benjamin Heinrichs.
Germany equalised in the 73rd minute when Eduard Lowen powered home a well-taken free-kick to set up a tense finale.

But the Ivorians held on to secure passage into the last eight where they will face 1992 Barcelona Olympic football winners Spain.

Also into the quarter-finals is Egypt who defeated Australia 2-0 in Group C.

A 44th minute opener from Yasser Rayan and Amar Hamdi’s 85th minute goal, gave Egypt their first win of Tokyo 2020.

The north Africans will now face champions Brazil in the quarter-finals.

Africa’s other representatives South Africa were hammered 3-0 by Mexico, thereby crashing out after losing all their three group games.

The two other quarter-finals will see South Korea face Mexico while hosts Japan and New Zealand will battle.

All the last eight ties will take place on Saturday July 31.

I’m seeing a potential African Super star on this Ahmad Diallo boy from ManU. The boy is joy to watch.

CAF is the cause of this and bring disgrace to Africa. We play weak zonal qualification and never evaluate our true strength. Africa will not watch Olympics football anymore after the great South Africa exit.

There wasn’t a zonal qualification for the Olympics, we had a proper U23 qualification tournament in Egypt. Nigeria lost out in the group stages to Cote d’Ivoire and Cameroun, if i remember.
If lawrence Akponokpona had Osimhem in the team like he wanted, we could have been in the football U23 olympic tournament. CIV had the red hot Kouame, despite the unavailability of pros. That made the difference.

Well, well, well. It’s been an awful summer of football for France. First, an early exit from the Euros. Followed by this Olympic mess. This French Olympic squad has got to be the worst French team of the past 3 decades. The worst assemblage of French players in a long, long time. How did they manage to qualify for the Olympics? You can imagine the French frustration at their misfortunes this summer. After such a great cup winning performance at the 2018 world cup, French football has sunk to an all time low. Even our Home based OTONDOS are better than their Olympic team, I dare say.

S/A was there just to make the number. There no chance in hell they will make an impart in any meaningful fashion to the game. Africa was not well served by their inclusion. Imo.

Lol, Edoman, noise maker Bobby will be angry with you ooo.
      Hahahahahaha!

Noise maker Bobby says Africa will stop watching the Olympics because SA has been bundled out. How arrogant! Actually, the Olympics just got more interesting, now that the pretenders have exited the event, lol. Salute to my SA friends! Bobby excluded!
