Nigeria’s U-17 girls, the Flamingos, will take another significant step towards the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup when they host neighbours Benin Republic in the first leg of the final qualifying round at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, on Saturday.
A place at the global showpiece is now within touching distance, with only two matches standing between the Flamingos and another World Cup appearance.
It is a familiar stage for one of Africa’s most successful youth teams, but that does not lessen the importance of the task ahead. While Saturday’s encounter will not decide the outcome of the tie, a positive result would hand Nigeria a crucial advantage before next week’s return leg in Benin.
The Flamingos have looked formidable throughout the qualifiers. Akeem Busari’s side cruised past Guinea with an emphatic 11-0 aggregate victory, showcasing their superiority in every department.
Nigeria combined free-flowing attacking football with defensive solidity, creating chances at will while giving their opponents little room to threaten. The performances highlighted not only the team’s technical quality but also its growing tactical discipline and maturity.

Determined to maintain that momentum, the Nigeria Football Federation and the coaching crew ensured the squad remained in top condition through intensive training sessions and a series of competitive friendly matches. The preparations have been geared towards keeping the players sharp for what is expected to be their toughest assignment of the campaign.
The Flamingos carry a proud pedigree in African youth football. Over the years, they have consistently produced talented players capable of excelling on the continental stage while also making Nigeria proud at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Benin Republic, however, will travel to Ikenne full of confidence after eliminating Sierra Leone 5-1 on aggregate to reach the final qualifying round. Their impressive run underlines the progress they have made, and they will be eager to upset one of Africa’s traditional powerhouses.
Although Nigeria start as favourites, the Flamingos know qualification will not come on reputation alone. Maintaining concentration, staying organised defensively and taking their chances in front of goal will be vital over the two legs.
With another World Cup ticket within reach, the Flamingos have every reason to believe they can get the job done. Their dominant displays against Guinea, thorough preparations and rich history at this level provide a strong platform, but they must first deliver another disciplined and convincing performance in front of their home fans on Saturday.
