Nigerian winger, Samuel Adegbenro (pictured above with teammate) was in action for his Norwegian club, Rosenborg BK as the Eirik Hornland’s men triumphed 3-1 over Maribor in Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League Third Qualifying Round second leg match at the Lerkendal Stadium, Trondheim, Norway, Completesports.com reports.
The win at the 21,421 capacity Lerkendal Stadium completed a huge 6-2 aggregate victory for the Norwegians who now sealed a place in the UEFA Champions League Playoffs phase.
Adegbenro, a former Kwara United winger, was however subbed off in the 69th minutes with scores at 1-1.
Adegbenro’s Nigerian compatriot at the club , David Akintola, 23, on loan from Midtjylland, was not selected for the tie.
Maribor took a first half lead through Pozeg who found the back of Rosenborg net in the added time of the first half raising his side’s hope of a possible reversal of the first leg 3-1 defeat at home.
But Soderland drew the home side level eight minutes after the break before Konradsen’ brace on 61 and 81 minutes sealed victory for the home side.
Another Adegbenro’s teammate at Rosenborg, Igoh Ogbu is out on loan at Sogndal, with the loan spell expected to run out on December 31, 2019.
Earlier on Tuesday, the duo of David Okereke and Emmanuel Blessed featured in Club Brugges’ 3-3 away draw against Dynamo Kiev. Brugge who won the first leg 1-0 advanced to the playoffs 4-3 on aggregate.
Krepin Diatta replaced Blessed in the 52nd minute while Okereke was substituted by Lois Openda in the 82nd minute.
It was a painful night for some Nigerian players as their clubs crash out of the Champions League following aggregate defeats to their opponents.
U-23 Eagles midfielder, Azubuike Okechukwu’s Turkish club, Istanbul Basaksehir lost 2-0 to Greek side, Olympiacos.
Azubuike who received a yellow card in the 32nd minute was in action for the entire 90 minutes in the game.
Olympiacos made it to the playoff as round 2-0 on aggregate.
Also the duo of Anderson Esiti and Chuba Akpom were in action in PAOK 3-2 away defeat to Ajax Amsterdam.
PAOK exited the competition 5-4 on aggregate.
Akpom was on from start to finish in the game, while Esiti was replaced by Josip Misic eight minutes from time.
