UCL Round Of 16: Giroud’s Spectacular Goal Seals First-Leg Win For Chelsea Away To Atletico As Bayern Thrash Lazio

An Olivier Giroud’s spectacular overhead kick gave Chelsea a narrow 1-0 win against Atletico Madrid in the first-leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie in Romania.

Having dominated much of the game, Chelsea’s pressure eventually paid off on 68 minutes when Giroud reacted with the stunning strike.

And aged 34 years and 146 days, Giroud is the oldest player to score in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League for Chelsea, and the oldest to do so for an English side since Ryan Giggs (37) in April 2011 vs Schalke.

It puts Chelsea in a good position heading into the reverse fixture, which is set to be held at Stamford Bridge despite Atletico being forced to give up their home advantage, with tonight’s match played in Romania.

This is the 14th time Chelsea have won the first leg of a European knockout tie away from home; they have progressed on each of the previous 13 occasions.

And in Rome Champions League holders Bayern Munich thrashed Lazio 4-1 to put themselves in a comfortable position to advance into the quarter-finals.

And own goal from Lazio’s Francesco Acerbi and goals from Robert Lewandowski, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sane, secured the win for the Bundesliga giants.
