UEFA Nations League: England Lose 4-0 To Hungary, Suffer Worst Home Defeat In 94 Years

Three Lions of England’s poor campaign in the UEFA Nations League continued as they suffered their worst home defeat since 1928, following a 4-0 hammering in the hands of Hungary at the Molineaux in League A Group 3 on Tuesday night.

Gareth Southgate’s side have now gone four games without a victory for the first time since 2014.

They could do nothing but capitulate to a humiliating and potentially damaging defeat that had the crowd booing and calling for Southgate’s job at the final whistle.

Roland Sallai gave Hungary the lead on 16 minutes with a well-taken finish at the back post, then doubled Hungary’s lead with his second in the 70th minute.

With 10 minutes left Zsolt Nagy fired in from range to make it 3-0 and England had John Stones sent off just two minutes after the visitor’s third goal.

And in the 89th minute Daniel Gazdag finished smartly to complete the rout.

Hungary earned their second win over the Three Lions on English soil and first since a famous 6-3 success at Wembley in 1953.

In the group’s other game, hosts Germany defeated Italy 5-2 to claim their first win after four games.

Germany ended the first half 2-0 up thanks to goals from Joshua Kimmich (10th minute) and Ilkay Gundogan (45+4 minute).

Thomas Muller added the third goal in the 51st minute with Timo Werner scoring two quick goals on 68 and 69 minutes to put Germany 5-0 ahead.

With 12 minutes left Italy pulled a goal back through Degnand Wilfried Gnonto and Alessandro Bastoni also scored to end the tie 5-2.

And after Tuesday’s games, Hungary top with seven points, Germany on six points are second, Italy Third with five points and England bottom with just two points.

In some other results, Michy Batshuayi got the only goal as Belgium pipped Poland 1-0 away, Memphis Depay’s injury time goal earned Netherlands a 3-2 win against Wales, Ukraine and Republic of Ireland played 1-1 and Scotland thrashed Armenia 4-1.

    Eyaaaa. O ma se ooo.
England don COLLECT WOTOWOTO on their home turf.
The loud BOO at the end of the game was deafening. Northgate is all of a sudden faced with the likelihood of unemployment, as irate fans demanded for his sack.
Saka and his colleagues running around like headless chickens. 3 Lions looking more like 3 Kitty cats.
No be only England collect today. Italy too collected 5-2 from Germany.
Football is a funny old game!

    • I asked my English cousin if Southgate should be sacked, guess what he said. “Though I am very disappointed with the score and the manner of the defeat, it will be naive to talk about sacking a coach so close to the world cup on the back of this….”

      • pompei 2 years ago

A coach that led them to 4th place at the 2018 world cup, and 2nd place at the European nations cup. Your cousin makes a valid point.

But @Leo why were you not reasoning like your cousin during Rohr sack, instead you sided with the NFF? Can you see the large demarcation in reasoning. That even if he is your cousin maybe by virtue of blood, but because he is English he reasons better. Their case is even different because world cup is still far. But Rohr was sacked just 3 weeks to a major tournament.

    • Quite on the contrary Mr Marvellous. I think you mistake me for another person. I am not surprised, even in this post you call me ‘Leo’! instead of deo.

After Nigeria’s 1:1 home draw against Cape Verde, I was one of the few people on earth who praised the Super Eagles for being so dugged enough to grind out the results which to me showed that they had character and would have a decent 2022 Afcon.

When the NFF announced they were sacking Rohr after that result, I was shocked and mortified. Though I ceased being a fan of Rohr, I still felt back then and feel now that sacking a coach so close to major assignments was tantamount to suicide.

On this CSN platform and on WhatsApp chat rooms, I was vociferous in my condemnation of the NFF for contemplating such a counterproductive move.

Never on this platform – after rumours started swirling that the NFF intended to sack Rohr around November last year – did I support such a stupid move. You will struggle to find a single contribution from me supporting Rohr’s sack after the 1:1 home draw against Cape Verde. Because it doesn’t exist!

Obviously after the NFF sacked Rohr, I decided not to cry over spilt milk and I decided not to stay in the past. Rohr or no Rohr, my support is for the Super Eagles and that support has continued after Rohr’s sack.

Perhaps you need to go and look for ‘Leo’. I am deo! If you use glasses to read, perhaps you need to have them on all the time. You should have gone to specsavers!

You seem so hell bent on looking for a fan-scape goat for Nigeria’s recent failures. May I suggest you look elsewhere, sir.

      Thank you.

Everyone knows that typo error isn’t a friend or enemy of one. @deo you are the one I referred to. You have made your point no issues, maybe someone else need specsavers not me who follow this group and read the sentiment of people. This group some people are straight forward like @monkeypost, @drey while supporting Rohr& eagles and some some(e.g the likes of @omo9ja) are straight forward in their hate towards Rohr&NFF. A large group of people falls under what the bible terms at neither COLD nor HOT. Thanks man. I haven’t personally appreciate your match and player analysis, so I can do it now. Is always nice reading it and maybe I can rate you next after the legendary @drey.

        Stay calm dude.

        • Marvelous, for the avoidable of doubt, I was never in favour of sacking Rohr on the eve of Afcon and crucial world cup qualifiers. I thought it was stupid then and I still think it is stupid now.

If I may add to the discussion, deo wasn’t in support of Rohr’s sacking. We know the key players, but it really doesn’t matter now. Peseiro may get it better than Rohr did, but it’s a matter of time. But for now, we will drink to these last two wins. God bless Nigeria.

You forgot to mention Jimmy, chima who were the mouth piece and PA to nff, odegbami and omo9ja

    Lol, @Deo
Your cousin is smarter than the NFF leadership board.

I think the Hungarians must have been parading Over-Age players. Just thinking what excuse England would be making after this heartbreaking loss to an Hungry side.

    • pompei 2 years ago

Hehehe. Northgate will be under intense scrutiny for a while. He has a lot of explaining to do.

  • Good for south gate instead of sticking to a good and formidable squad his just running around to cap players to avoid Nigeria and other African countries to have access to players of her root.

  • all those that suppose play for naija in that england team…should just forget the upcoming world cup…

  • felix 2 years ago

The question to ask is why all the noise. Not many European managers fancy this tournament. So many like to experiment which was what south gate did. So lets top all this noise about rorh did this or that. By now he should be replacing the coach of France, they under performing in this tournament and the World cup is 5 months away.

    • Marvelous 2 years ago

Brother man you lie. No coach is underating this tournament. The team is bad that’s all, to European teams every match and tournament is as important like the previous. I hardly include England in my bet because they ain’t good enough, let me shock you. Is possible for me to play super eagles straight win than play England. They are just parading English stars but cant score goals. England like playing Un1.5 Un2.5 and Un3.5 sometimes. Hardly before they score. And they were playing an emerging and improving Hungary. No matter how you don’t like a tournament you should not go down by 4—0.

If it was a super eagle coach, will you say super eagle doesn’t like the tournament????????
