As part of celebration to mark its 250th independence anniversary, the United States Consulate General in Lagos organised a football tournament tagged ‘Freedom Cup’.
The tournament which was held on Tuesday, 16 June, 2026, took place at the Upbeat Recreational Centre, Lekki, Lagos.
It brought together U.S. government exchange alumni, students, journalists, representatives of the Lagos State Government as well as members of the U.S. Mission community.
Also present was to celebrate the occasion was the U.S. Consul General Rick Swart.
At the end of the matches Team Truth – made up of journalists- emerged champions after defeating Team Opportunity 5-2 in the final, while the third place went to Team Legacy.
Medals and trophies were given out to the champions, runners-up and third place team by the Consul General.
After the conclusion of the medal and trophies presentations, a friendly game was played between Team U.S. and Team Lagos.
In his remarks, Swart said he is honoured being the Consulate General at the US Consulate General here in Lagos and loves Lagos for its spirit and vitality.
Swart thanked everyone for their energy and enthusiasm as the U.S. celebrate 250 years of American independence and sport diplomacy, stating through sports that’s where people come together.
On the World Cup 2026, he said:”Just last week FIFA World Cup 2026 began, this is the first time since 1994 that the United States is hosting the tournament. Thugs is historic because the United States joined Canada and Mexico to co-host teams across 16 cities in North America.
“For the next five weeks millions of fans from countries on every continents including right here in Nigeria will tune in to watch what is happening. And what they will see in the eleven US host cities among them – Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta – is American excellence on full display. They will see Organisation, infrastructure and hospitality and only the United States can deliver in celebration of the world sport, football or as we call it in the United States soccer.”
He expressed disappointment that Nigeria’s Super Eagles did not qualify for this year’s World Cup but pointed out that the country is still well represented.
“Unfortunately, the Super Eagles are not in the World Cup but Nigeria is very much present at the World Cup 2026. From Afrobeats stars like Burna Boy, Rema who opened the tournament with the official FIFA World Cup 2026 theme song ‘Die Die’. And also Davido is making history as the first Nigerian artiste to perform at the World Cup twice in a row.
“There are also more than 15 players of Nigerian heritage representing other nations including Folarin Balogun, who scored two goals in Team USA opening match. Players like Balogun, David Alaba of Austria and Eberechi Eze of England among many others represent the growing global recognition that the Nigerian spirit of resilience, grit and determination is introducing some of the finest football talents in the world and we see that and we celebrate that.”
Speaking at the event, Acting Public Affairs Officer, US Consulate General, Lagos, Amanda Roach Brown said:”It’s Freedom 250 and it’s our freedom cup. This is because the United States the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence this year. In addition, we are hosts the FIFA World Cup 2026 that’s currently taking place across 11 US cities.
“So we brought together Lagos State government, the US Consulate but also participants of some of our exchange programmes and, of course, Nigerian journalists to play some friendly matches to really celebrate the bonds that we have between each other because sports.”
