Ernesto Valverde has hailed the capture of Frenkie de Jong and says he is an important addition to the Barcelona ranks. Barcelona have fought off competition from the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain to sign the player, who will stay with Ajax for now and officially link up with the rest of the squad during the summer.
Barca have paid 75million euros for the 21-year-old and Valverde says it is money well spent as he feels De Jong will be a star for many years to come.
“An important addition,” Valverde said. “A player with quality and a future that we think is a signing with a long perspective for Barca and we wish him the best. His success will be the success of the club.”
Valverde was speaking after his side’s shock first-leg loss to Sevilla in the Copa del Rey quarter-final, when Barca went down 2-0.
