Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka has requested a wildcard to play in the US Open for one final time, following a first-round exit to Roman Andres Burruchaga at the Estoril Open.
This emotional defeat marked the final clay-court appearance of his farewell season.

The 41-year-old Swiss three-time Grand Slam champion, who won the US Open in 2016, stated that he hopes to be able to play at Flushing Meadows one last time.
His request comes amidst his ongoing retirement tour as he gears up for the remainder of the hard-court season.
“I grew up on clay. I grew up practising on clay and watching clay-court tournaments, so clay was always special for me,” Wawrinka said after his latest loss.
“I’ve requested a wild card for the US Open. I hope to be able to play there one last time,” Wawrinka confirmed.
However, he is hoping for a wild card from organisers, which will make him avoid having to play in the qualifying rounds.

He was given such passes at the Australian Open and Wimbledon earlier this year.
Wawrinka is a Swiss professional tennis player widely celebrated as one of the greatest of his generation.
His defining achievements include winning 16 ATP Tour singles titles, including three Grand Slams (2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open, 2016 US Open) and an Olympic gold medal in doubles.
