West Ham Reveal Midfielder Interest

Manuel Pellegrini says West Ham were in the hunt to sign Besiktas midfielder Gary Medel, but eventually pulled the plug on the deal.

The Hammers had a pretty quiet transfer window when bringing in just two players in the form of Samir Nasri and Mesaque Dju, but Pellegrini says a third arrival looked on the cards at one point.

West Ham were in the hunt to sign former Cardiff City midfielder Medel, who they were initially told would be available on a free transfer, only for it then to emerge the deal would command a fee.

That meant West Ham would have needed to cash in on a current member of the squad, something Pellegrini was not willing to do, despite Medel’s versatility. “The only player we had interest in was Gary Medel,” said Pellegrini.

“They told us it was free and we were interested because he can play in two or three positions. “But then it turned out the player was not free.”

Whether the Hammers will re-ignite their interest in the summer remains to be seen, but for now they will go with what they have got.
