Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Dosu Joseph has described Clemens Westerhof and Johannes Bonfrere as two of the best foreign coaches blessed with technical and tactical qualities the senior national team has ever employed.
The Atlanta Olympic gold medalist stated this during an interview on PUNCH Online interview programme, Kick&Follow, where he condemned the other coaches employed after them as mechanics.
Recall that after the duo of Westerhof and Bonfrere led the team to win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, the latter also helped the Dream Team 1 (Olympic Eagles) to win the 1996 Olympic Football Game.
Since that success, Nigeria has employed coaches such as Philippe Troussier, Bora Milutinovic, Thijs Libregts, Berti Vogts, Lars Lagerback, and Gernot Rohr.
Dosu said: “The best foreign coach the NFF has appointed during my era was Clemens Westerhof and Johannes Bonfrere. After these two, the rest are all mechanics,” Dosu said.
“Let’s talk about the current coach (Gernot Rohr), he has been around for five years but what has he done?
“The late Stephen Keshi was in charge of the team for three years; he won the AFCON and led the team to a round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
“They are not better than the local coaches. We are waiting to see when they will win the AFCON with the Eagles.”

Dosu has given @omonja a mother of all bombs to use against Rohr today. Chai chai chai!!!!
There we go again. Can you imagine that. Kai, akoba gafara. No comment @Yinkus. Continue. God bless Nigeria!!!
go sit down dere
My brother Dosu God bless you, all others are fake. The blem should go to Nff because they are interested in making money in of developing our football. Shame on them!
You said it all Mr. Dosu Joseph.
You see gentleman, we have to be optimistic with ourselves in this country.
Most especially on this platform. We have so many groups on here that are backing the coach and they even went further to say Oga Rohr is the best coach that ever coached Eagles.
Then, I asked myself what has he done differently with his average achievements by winning Bronze medals and qualifying Nigeria to both Afcon and world cup with some games left to be played upon the caliber of players we have had then and even at the moment?
Whoever that reading this comment today and see nothing wrong with Oga Rohr Super Eagles means that they don’t love their country and they know nothing about our football history and our level in football.

You are absolutely right Oga Dosu.
Let’s hope for the best. NFF brought us to this level. Our oppressors are wicked and we Nigerians must bring Nigeria back. We can’t continue like this my people. Hmm. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
@omo9ja, am just kidding nio don’t take that serious abeg. Well done sir. I use to enjoy our comments.
Not at all bro. I’m joking with you as well. That’s why I said no wahala, continue lolz.
Thanks for enjoying my comments wella but please let’s join hands together to move Nigeria forward. That’s our no1 priority as the citizens of Nigeria.
To be honest with you, I’m not impressed with the way the gaffer is running the team with no direction. We don’t even know if he’s moving the team forward or backward. It is well. One love bro. Ire o. God bless us all. God bless Nigeria!!!
@omo9ja has spoken….
Who’s me to revolt?
U said u don’t know whether SE is moving forward or backward under ROHR but u fail to tell us where this our PE TEACHER COACH (Rohr) took this team from and where we’re now….
:::::SHALOM:::::
When the late Stephen Keshi won the AFCON and qualified us to the world and got to the scond round, he inherited a team that couldn’t qualify to the AFCON and that team was handled by Samsia Siasia. I wonder the noise about inheritance. Also, the current Algerian coach took a team that did not qualify to the nations cup. After six months, he won the nations cup. Some folks here are contented with mediocrity. The truth of the matter is Rohr is an average coach.
omo9ja baba mi, what is position of the team before Rohr took over?
Hahahahaha…@ Yinkus. Dosu has really given @omo9ja a mother of all bombs to use against Rohr today and CSN also needs traffic.
which one of those coaches inherited a SE that had not qualified for AFCON back to back and was ranked 70th in the world…LMAO.
Its like some of you dont really know how bad a nation’s football is if it cant qualify for 3 out of 4 AFCONS and 2 on a trot. LMAO. Teams like Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Sudan etc are the ones in this type of category. That was where we were 5 years ago.
Westerhof inherited a SE that had played in the final of AFCON 3 times in 8 years, played at the seoul 88 olympics and 3 generations of U17 and U20 world cup finalists and still took 5 years to win AFCON. Bonfrere Jo inherited a SE that has played in 2 finals in 4 years and was ranked no 5 in the world and still didnt win the AFCON eventually.
Rohr inherited a SE that couldnt even finish as best looser in ordinary AFCON qualifying series back-to-back and was ranked no 70 in the world and still came very close to the peak of these 2.
Hatred is indeed a disease….I wonder which mechanic will make a broken down car compete in a formular one race in quicker time than a car which just needs replacing a burst tyre or a battery change.
If Rohr is a mechanic…what then should we call those who couldn’t even qualify for ordinary AFCON and dragged us to 70th in the world…?? Dustbin pickers abi…? LMAO. Rohr couldnt even play in AFCON up till the 3rd year of his appointment because some African Guadiolas failed to lead us to the 2017 AFCON.
This argument has long been dead and buried. Dosu and his paymasters should move on. This mechanic will be in charge till 2022….LMAO..they should learn to deal with that. We have important qualifiers ahead of us in a few weeks which will see us reach our 3rd consecutive tournament under this mechanic with games to spare….we dont need unnecssary distractions. Anybody that doesnt like this mechanic should bear the pain till 2022. If some overrated incompetent folks did not destroy our National team in the first place, we wouldnt need to go and get this mechanic.
Thanks man. Some of them just have their selfish interests and are less concerned about the facts you stated above.
My bro this is the problem am having With some people here,i think that people like dosu and co are condemning Rohr because he is not doing what dey wanti mean to collect money and invite their lazy players, because those fools want to impose him their players
I dropped that fact here long time ago. The most vocal attackers of Rohr…from Segun Odegami to Akpoborie to Dosu, Yakubu etc…all of them are all owners of player agencies.
Have you ever heard Adepoju attack Rohr…??
Have you ever heard Kanu attack the coach…???
Have you ever heard Okocha attack the coach…?? Just last week on this same CSN…Jayjay warned that Benin & Lesotho games won’t be easy for the Super Eagles, that’s arguably Nigeria’s GOAT speaking….Heavens did not fall. If it were Rohr that said something similar…you would have read 120 comments of verbal attacks on Rohr’s personality here.
Does Adepoju own a player agency…..NO.
Does Kanu own a player agency…..NO.
Does Okocha own a player agency….NO.
A hungry man is an angry man….we know the reasons why some of these people are angry at Rohr….LMAO
@ Drey you have just hit the nail on the head. Dosu n cohorts have been the THE ONES I REFER AS CRIMINALS/ EVIL ON HERE. THEY HAVE BEEN THE ONES BEHIND THE SCENE ORCHESTRATING ROHRS/ DESERVING PLAYERS DOWNFALL, NO APOLOGIZIES AT ALL FOR SAYING THAT. He tried to force Blessing Eleke but failed. They tried everything to discredit Iwobi to make way for Ramon Azeez n many others. Just unfortunate some forumites don’t see how evil these people are. They think we just support Rohr/players irrespective, not understanding we do simply because we understand their self serving inspired motives hence choose to sometimes overlook the short coming of Rohr/certain players. HOW ON EARTH WILL A RIGHT THINKING SO CALLED EX INTERNATIONAL COME UP WITH SUCH CYNICAL STATEMENT AT SUCH CRITICAL TIME OF AFCON QUALIFIER. THESE LOTS ARE NOT ANY BETTER THAN THE SAME MECHANIC HE MADE REFERENCE TO
Omo eniyan,
You’re not impressed with a coach that qualified you to 2 major tournaments with a game to spare? A coach that has brought in so many talented foreign based players? A coach that played 1-1 with Neymar and Brazil? Beat Argentina 4-2? Beat Lewandowski and Poland 1-0 at their home? A coach that thrashed Cameroun 4-0? Beat Mahrez and Algeria 3-1? That is the worst defeat this Algeria team has suffered in a while, mind you. And they have faced tough teams all along. Only Nigeria under Rohr has beaten them by such a margin.
Let’s even leave his achievements on the pitch. Let’s talk character. You don’t like a coach that keeps working and delivering, even when his salary is unpaid? A coach that is never in the news for negative reasons? A coach that knows how to talk to the press? A COACH THAT KEEPS THE HARMONY AND CAMARADERIE IN THE SQUAD INTACT? This is extremely important! When was the last time you heard a player quarrel with another player, or with coaching staff? This was always happening in the past, especially in the time of African Guardiola!
African Guardiola ran away from the job when water pass garri, but Rohr is still here coping, even though the working conditions are so bad.
Bros, let us appreciate this man. Nobody said he is the best coach we ever had. What we are saying is that he is a good coach, and he is trying. He can be better, no doubt. But he has done well.
This is totally uncalled for from Dosu.
I don’t want to believe a man like Troussier who qualified us to the world cup in 98 seamlessly is a mechanic?
They might not be our cup of tea and didn’t live up to expectation but in context; Lagerback,Vogts have proven else where how good they are. Far from the jab “mechanic”..
Apart from the late Keshi and his former boss, Amodu ; which local coach has succeeded with the Eagles when given the chance? Even Keshi and the great “Bonfrere” came short at the end and were given the boot. Do we label them mechanic as well or maybe farmers!.
Dosu should understand that a lot ties in to succeed in a clime like ours and a short change organisation like the NFF. Everything should be taken into context; logic should always hold sway rather than emotional outbursts.
I am not against a Nigerian taking the helms of the Eagles but not for the sake of his “Nigerianess” but more so for his work ethics and CV. He or she should merit it. We shouldn’t be cowered into this emotional blackmail or we keep going around in circles.
Rohr might not have it all technically, but who really does! There is no perfect coach out there and there is always room to improve. His work and result has proven that we are on the right path, we just need a bit of tweak here and there and we are good.
I dont think Dosu knows the implication of all he said. Amodu Shuaibu, Christian Chukwu, Austin Eguavoen, Berti Vogts, Lars Lagerback, Samson Siasia, Sunday Oliseh…..all these ones too must be mechanics too….since none of them reached the heights of Westerhof and Bonfrere as SE coaches. Because if not winning the AFCON is not acceptable for a foreigner, why should it be acceptable for a local…moreso when a local as shown that it can be won by locals too?? And that to me is complete disrespect to his former colleagues, his elders and utter unprofessionalism. And its worse off coming from someone who is not known to have coached at any level b4.
The Mechanic called Troussier is worshipped in Japan today….he even had a statue built in his name. The Mechanic called Vogts won the Euros for his country. The Mechanic called Lagerback was honoured in Iceland for leading them all the was to the Qfinals of Euros and their only world cup. This mechanic called Rohr has gone all the way to the final of European club competition with a modest side like Girondais de Bourdeaux and took us out of the mess overrated guadiolas put us. Which current Nigerian coach alive comes close to any of these mechanics in terms of career achievement. If these ones are mechanics, so what are our local coaches…??
Any small thing, they mention Amodu and Keshi…..and my question is which Nigerian coach currently (and as at when Rohr was employed) has the kind of CV those 2 (and Rohr himself) had as at when they were appointed SE coaches….the answer remains NONE. The only one who has come close (but yet still far behind) to any of the 2 is Amuneke….unfortunately….the SE Manager position is not vacant yet and he is contracted elsewhere.
So if these ex-internationals like…let them make all the noise they can make till eternity, but never again would the SE coach be thrown at anybody just because they are Nigerian….or ex-internationals. Their mates are getting jobs in Europe (the same europe where they lied to us that nobody wants to give them jobs bcos they are blacks) with strong CVs. Who will give you a job is any sane clime if you’ve got nothing to show..??. Kolo Toure is in Ukraine after assisting in 2 English clubs, his elder brother is at Leicester City FC…..Raidi Jaidi (former Tunisia defender) just left Southampton to to take up a job in Belgium or so….Achille Webo former cameroon striker is at Besiktas….senegalese ex-international Mbaye Leye is now head coach at Standard liege after being an assistant previously….. I can go on and on. All of them started basic coaching their former clubs before growing to bigger roles elsewhere. Our own exinternationals are perennially on the pages of the media attacking Rohr and waiting for the NFF to throw jobs at them…..LMAO. If they spend half the time they spend on Rohr on their own careers, we wouldnt even have needed to go employ Rohr in the 1st place.
@Dr Drey, what else can I say? I was typing my comments when I read yours, and I just decided against it because you have nailed it all… Dosu and Co are clowns
Another unfair assessment of Rohr’s tenure. The question shouldn’t be how many years has Rohr been with super eagles. Instead, it should be in this two fold: how many qualifications has Rohr participated in and what is his success rate in this regard? And how many tournaments has he engaged in? The first question precede the second because without qualifying for a tournament you can’t participate in it.
Why is Dosu’s assessment of Rohr’s performance unfair? Simply because Rohr has participated in only two proper tournaments and 3 qualifications. Saying what has Rohr done in the last five years is quite hilarious. I mean what did you expect him to achieve in the year 2020? He just played four games, what trophy did you expect him to win? Yet, his critics will include 2020 and even the year he got employed. Lol.
The only tournament Rohr “failed” was the world cup. This isn’t even the right rendition of what Rohr’s performance. I will rather go for the term “average”. The reason is because the last time we participated in the tournament we reached the knockout stage. Of course, Rohr can still squeeze two excuses out by saying he was against Argentina- a nation Nigeria had never beaten in the world cup for like how long now? Not only that, but the former runner up of the tournament and boasts of arguably the greatest player of all time, the god himself Lionel Messi. Also, he was against Croatia, the runner up of the tournament. Would Stephen Keshi and the names Dosu mentioned had fared better? We will never know. Personally, I don’t think Keshi would. Just my opinion.
Rohr has done obviously well in the three qualifications. With all due respect, even the Big Boss can’t boast of that!
I’m just wondering why this kind of talks should come up.
“i smell a dead rat here”
This’re the people that want the team to fail so a foreigner can be sacked.
Hahahahahaha
see mentality.
Imagine the kind of people we’re sharing the same habitat with.
U want a human like u to die so u can take his office.
Quit laughable.
Don’t worry i trust NFF….When u shout too much nff would just look for one underage team and give u to go and disgrace yourself.
Hahahahahaha.
They keep telling us the gaffer is not good, the gaffer has no technics and tactics, but the last time i checked, untill Rohr took over SE can’t be on the pitch and change formation like the game against ENGLAND, ARGENTINA, ICLAND.
Presently we have many tactics we can use and cage our opponent.
When last did that happen in SE?
KESHI prefered 4-4-2(where EMINKE pairs IDEYE) or modern day formation (4-2-3-1).
Rohr came with so many tactics yet we still claim he has no tactics/technics.
I wonder the kind of tactics we’re looking for.

@UBFE, don’t compare late Stephen Keshi with Rohr because Keshi was far better than him. Keshi won AFCON as a player and as a coach. He is the second person in the history of African football to do so. He also assisted Bonfrere, late Amodu and so on. Amodu’s results were also better than Rohr. He qualified Nigeria twice to the world cup. Those guys never dented our result. I once called Amodu a specialist because of the bumpy football he played.
This is just a distraction from these guys at a crucial time…..
Dosu have been running academy for donkey years, yet none of his player is playing in real madrid or any big club, he’s talking about technicality,Rohr is not the best coach in the world, but he is still better than what Nigeria had before he came.
*Dosu has*
they once played for nigeria nd now they think the country should either favour their pockets or sink……segun odegbami once advised that because no WHITE NATION would recruit a BLACK MAN to coach her country’s football team we should SACK GERNOT ROHR nd hire a nigerian coach then BEGIN TO SWIM AND SINK with him…..he suggested nd recommended JOSEPH YOBO nd we all know what input he is giving……apart from JAY JAY,KANU,ADEPOJU nd their likes who own no football agencies the rest are selfish, inconsiderate nd disgusting……imagine a DOSU who is pitied for living on wheelchair talking rubbish nd taking side with reprobates…….while the likes of DAVID BECKAM,WAYNE ROONY,KOEMAN,LAMPARD,GATTUSO ETC.have stepped up nd are doing great in coaching these lazy local champions are stagnantly focused on the nff nd super eagles for means of livelihood
This’s a silly distraction we don’t need this right now, Dosu should’ve waited after the Benin and Lesotho match before bringing the hammer out. I would never question his patriotism because his has fought wars for Naija, but he should’ve waited, a notable figure like him should knows when to inject venoms into super Eagles affair. Some of us have our reservations about Rohr, but will going to wait till after the qualification to give our verdicts. The man is not a mechanic he has really tried, especially his selections, most of his invitees are based on merit. And has brought many young foreign born players to play us, i think super Eagles historians would be kind to him.
Some unscrupulous ex internationals are simply lazy and idle in nature. How on Earth could one classified Rohr as a mechanic when his achievements are glaring compare to the state of our football when he arrived for SE job. ‘One’s enemy can’t ever kill big grasscutter ‘ These ex what should take a cue from other ex African stars aforementioned by Dr Drey ,so as to develop and upgrade themselves rather than searching for short cut, let’s your mettle speaks volumes. Obviously, these ex internationals are empty vessels. I believe Nigeria has come of age of jettison mediocre as a coach. Rohr will definitely see the last month of his contract with NFF. Forward ever for patriotic football fans backward ever for treacherous player agents .God bless Nigeria
