‘Why I Want A Foreign Coach For The Super Eagles’ —Udeze

‘Why I Want A Foreign Coach For The Super Eagles’ —Udeze

Former Nigeria international Ifeanyi Udeze has said he would prefer a foreign coach to handle the Super Eagles.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to announce a new coach for the Eagles following the exit of former handler Austine Eguavoen.

Though the football body has since named assistant coaches for the Eagles, they are yet to appoint a new handler.

And commenting on the delay in appointing a new coach, Udeze made it clear that he would not have a problem if a local coach is appointed but his preferred choice remains a foreigner.

“Left to me I will prefer a foreign coach to handle the Super Eagles because of what just happened,” he said on Brila FM.

“We had a local coach but we all saw what happened, he failed to qualify us for the World Cup. But if the NFF go ahead to appoint a local coach no problem because there is no time, the 2023 AFCON qualifiers is close but my preferred choice is a foreign coach.”

The Eagles will hope to bounce back from the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup qualifier when the race for the 2023 AFCON kicks off.

They are in the same qualifying group with Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Principe or Mauritius.

  • Hmmm…”we all saw what happened” very deep.
Udeze wasn’t part of the 94 Squad so I understand.
    In foreign Manager we trust.

  • DON'T MIND THEM 2 years ago

Udeze should not let ODEGBAMI, and other ex-players to hear this. Because they will not able to collect bribe and introducing players to coaches through their academy and local leagues.

  • Nff, this matter still dey ground.

  • Nff, this matter still dey ground. Abi na we dey holam?

  • This guys like feeling me, this matter still dey ground?

Ify my brother thank you and God bless you. They are already plan how to chop aprico money from Portugal pesario but sports minister no gree. So confusion full glass house now.

      • benakay 2 years ago

        Look at you…
The sports minister you’re worshipping here is the real crook.
Is the stupid sports minister going to pay for the big names he says he wants? Has he put down 1 kobo to support the NFF?

Some of you are so gullible, its not even funny.

        • Ralph 2 years ago

So where is the NFF getting all the millions they wasted on AFCON and WCQ from if not from the sport ministry? Do you think the sport minister can have a say in whoever the coach is gonna be if the ministry is not gonna have hands in the money matter? Think again.

WHAT MAKES ME TO BE IN SUPPORT OF FOREIGN COACH IS THAT: THEY DON’T COLLECT BRIBE BEFORE THEY INVITE BE PLAYERS INTO NATIONAL TEAM AND NOT USING SENTIMENT IN SELECTING PLAYERS INTO THEIR SQUAD.
*** AS NIGERIA PLAYERS SCATTERED ABROAD,NFF NEED TO EMPLOY STANDARD FOREIGN COACH THAT KNOWS ABOUT AFRICA FOOTBALL AND NIGERIA PLAYERS BOTH HOME & ABROAD.***

  • Mike iyowore 2 years ago

@Sule, na you hold am??? Very funny.

  • Fanny 2 years ago

This Udeze is funny or has no sense. Rohr was there for 6 years for only a bronze. While local coach won Gold, Silver many bronzes. Let’s give the local managers some years to do their best.

    • Well..@Prof Fanny with lots of Senses, Let me give QUIZ with no reward.
*who was there when we lost Germany 2006 qualification to Angola?
*Who was there when we lost 2016 Qualifiers to South Africa and Congo?
*Who was there when we lost 2017 Qualifiers to Egypt?
*Then who was there when we lost the slot to Ghana this 2022?
So may be Udeze knows what he was saying.

      • Gabriel 2 years ago

Udeze is a carton that is how we say it in Nigeria. You can expect to win everytime but you will surely win some and lose some. I’m aware Mancini, the coach of Italy National team does lose but he is with the Azzuris. They even have a friendly this month or there about.

      • benakay 2 years ago

Sean, you forgot to mention who was in charge when Nigeria ‘won’ the worst performance record at the AFCON in 40 yrs!!!

Some people here are so dense, its scary.

    • Fanny, I think dementia has eaten deep in to your skull because you forgot that it was a foreigner who took us to our first world cup appearance, after winning Afcon 94 in Tunisia, also it was a foreigner that led us to Atlanta Olympic gold medal( the first for the whole countinent. Besides, Rohr fulfilled all his given tasks. He was never told categorically to win the trophy rather to qualify us for the various competitions and in the case of Afcon to go as far as the Semifinal.Rohr accomplished all those assignments seamlessly. We qualified in most cases with 2 to 3 games left to play.Think of the 2018 group of death with Nigeria,Cameron,South Africa, Rohr tutored Eagles was a team dreaded even by the indomitable Lions. Eguavon on the other hand is a serial failure yet the NFF keep calling him back because he is always ready for deals and can be very easily manipulated. Those calling for indigenous coach have a hidden agenda behind this undeserving calls.Yes the late Stephen Keshi won Afcon 13, took us to the world cup albeit using non qualified players(if based on merit) and also dragged the Super Eagles to unchartered territory of NO.59 in Fifa ranking whereas a foreign coach took us to the 5th position in Fifa ranking. Those agitating for indigenous coach are simply dubious.

      • You’ve forgotten to remind I’m that it was a foreigner, Otto Gloria that gave us our first Silverware in 1980.

    • DANURCHMAN 2 years ago

What more did you want him to achieve? The man met the targets given yo him by NFF. Rohr began coaching the Super Eagles in August, 2016,after Siasia failed to qualify The Super Eagles for 2017 AFCON. So Rohr was not in charge of the Eagles that failed to qualify for AFCON 2O17.Consequently, Nigeria under Rohr, were not among the AFCON 2O17 contenders. When Rohr came in August 2O16,he immediately qualified Eagles for 2O18 World Cup in Russia, which Nigeria attended. This was the only World Cup Finals Rohr took Nigeria to before he was sacked by NFF. He and his team worked very hard to qualify for the final round of Qatar 2O22 before he was sacked. Don’t also forget that the first and only AFCON finals that Rohr took Nigeria to was Egypt 2O19,where Rohr at his first shot at the AFCON, got the Bronze with his team. He successively qualified for his second shot at the AFCON 2O21, even after Nigeria could not qualify successively twice, before his arrival, before NFF foolishly sacked him and then squandered our chances at the forthcoming Qatar 2O22. So Mr man, what else did you want Rohr to achieve which he did not achieve? When you say he spent 6 years achieving nothing, be honest to analyse his performances well, even with hatred for him. There is no single justiable ground for any reasonable person to condemn or crucify Mr. Rohr.

    • Himes 2 years ago

I think you don’t have sense. There is no good local coach. Keshi was active in africa coaching Mali and Togo. Is there any active Nigerian coach like keshi anymore? Eguaveon no wan coach unless na Super eagles job

They should get an active foreign coac to help with team rebuild

  • TALK UR OWN 2 years ago

DON’T LET US BE DECIEVING OURSELVES. A LOCAL COACHES THAT IS STAGNANT FOR MANY YEARS(e.g. Equavoen), DIDN’T EXPOSED TO MODERN FOOTBALL(e.g. Salisu Yusuf) OR DIDN’T PASS THROUGH REFRESHER COURSES(e.g.Joseph Yobo), WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO OFFER TO NIGERIA PLAYERS/TEAMS.
$$$ BUT A STANDARD FOREIGN COACH POSSESED THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS $$$:
** MORE EXPOSED TO MODERN TRAINING AND TECHNICALITY OF MODERN FOOTBALL
    ** ALWAYS MAINTAIN THEIR STAND
** THEY CANNOT BE PUSHOVER/ CONTROLLED
    ** THEY DON’T COLLECT BRIBE
    ** THEY DON’T USE SENTIMENT
    ** NO PREFECTIAL TREATMENT
** TECHNICALLY MORE MATURED & EXPOSED
** COMMAND MORE RESPECT FROM PLAYERS THAN LOCAL COACHES

i dnt understand y nff is still toiling with d happiness of 1million of fans in their delay of hiring a substantive coach for the senior national nd i have also heard dey have shortlisted 4 coaches for the vacant position in d persons of valverde cocu peseiro and blanc so my question is y the delay NFf is seriously the problem the sports ministry recommended cocu to be the one to pilot the football affairs while the nff prffered option is peseiro PESEIRO THAT HAS NO RECORD TO JUSTIFY Y HE IS MORE QUALIFIED to pilot the national team i have said it time without number NFF is just making mockery of our football setup the ealier we know this the better

    • You have said it all my brother.
After getting a local coach that couldn’t qualify us for World Cup.
We all saw how technically and tactically deficient our local coaches for the Ghana games yet we are still being sentimental.
Even Ghana that had a local head coach came from Borrusia Dortmund in Germany. He was exposed to the modern approaches in football.

  • Luke Omanaen 2 years ago

You are even fair with udeze. He is a legbere, what even stopped him from coaching the SE as a former player? Abi the so-called foreign coaches senior am? By the way, what’s udeze profession? Nff should have the development of the local league and invitation of domestic players to the national side since it is only a local coach like Eguavoen can guarantee that based on his recent record.

    • GBAM !!!

Besides running the local league aground, it is a waste of funds. Local coach make sense.

      • Abiodun 2 years ago

I almost thought I’m the only one thinking. What’s really interesting in an expatriate coach? Nothing. Eguavoen should continue on interim basis till nff gets a coach.

      • Bello 2 years ago

I align with u @Dayo: That means Udeze no really get sense.

  • Here are the Home base coaches that have won something since till date( the only name missing is Onigbinde 1984 ..SILVA)….
    *Nigeria: Christian Chukwu (2002–2005) …#2 Bronze(s)
*Nigeria: Augustine Eguavoen (2005–2007) #1 Bronze
*Nigeria:: Shaibu Amodu (2008–2010) #1 Bronze
*Nigeria: Stephen Keshi (2011–2014) #1 GOLD
    …Then Siasia who won 2 Olympic Silva(s) as a Coach(2008 and 2016).
Now! Two of those names up here are no more, (Amodu and Keshi) and one is now Old and just getting better (Chukwu)

Now! We have Siasia and Eguavoen left and we’ve tried both and they let us down.so enuf of all these local coaches has won silverware in the past..the question is who were those that won it and where are they now?
If they are still available then are they still capable?
    Names of other available coaches..
    *Olise
    *Yobo
    *Yusuf
    *Egbo
    *Finidi
    *Ogbu
*And may be others from our local leagues..
So tell me whom among all these are really capable and better than ANY, I repeat ANY foreign coach including Paseiro?
If you have any Home base coach name on mind, pls, let’s hear it.

    • This udeze guy is mumu+. How could he say he prefers a forei coach knowing fully well he is a product of local league. Or is this mumu not aware that foreign coaches only invite foreign based players for games? Like he has forgotten how his life changed based on his invitation to the national team. Udeze abeg no dey follow put maot for SE talk again. Abi weree no boboyi?

      • @Wale, were you once a Nigerian player? I guess not but Udeze played for super Eagles.
He played under a foreigner and an homebased coach so may be he had his reasons for choosing a foreigner.

  • Chibuike 2 years ago

Belgium Emplored Martinez from Spain. Colombia emplore Argentina coach. Paraguay have Argentina coach. Brazil is looking forward to emplore Gadiola. Egypt that carried nations Cup almost 9times always emplore foreign coach. Nigeria never learn from their past mistake. Oya explore local coach let’s see who will carry one day.

    • We know but we no be Belgium.

    • I NO FI LAUGH 2 years ago

As NIGERIANS like U.K used/fairly used(tokunbo) items/products, why NFF no go for U.K./fairly used/tokunbo coach imported from Netherlands/ Germany/China. At least,it will still be avoidable in terms of price, last long & high quality than original local Coach made(with bribe & sentiment) in Nigeria

  • Ayiyi 2 years ago

The delay means the nff is not even interested. Full stop!

The argument supporting the hiring of a local coach as a matter of obligation is THOROUGHLY FLAWED.
If you look around the world, successful clubs have a common thread. They hire the best coaches they can afford.
Liverpool, for instance will not make their coaching position available only to Englishmen to favour THEIR OWN. Never. They are too hungry and ambitious for that nonsense.
They hired a German because he is the best their money can buy.
Man City and Arsenal have Spanish coaches.
Man United have a Dutch coach.
Real Madrid, as proud and accomplished as the Spanish club is in football, have an Italian manager.
The list goes on and on.
None of these clubs will hire coaches just to put THEIR OWN in jobs. No way. They go for the best only.
Why is our own different? Abi we no like better thing?
We need A WORLD CLASS coach for the SE. The very best, and we should be ready to invest in that process.
