Nigeria’s Super Falcons will hope to win the Women’s WAFU Cup title for the first time when they take on hosts Cote d’Ivoire in the final of the competition
at the Stade Robert Champroux in Abidjan on Saturday (today ), reports Completesports.com.
The nine-time Africa champions set up a final date with the hosts following a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win against perennial rivals and defending champions Ghana in the semi-final on Thursday.
The encounter with Ghana was a repeat of last year’s semi final, which the Super Falcons lost, and although both teams had chances to score, regulation time ended 0-0 and the game had to go into penalty shoot-out.
The Black Queens fluffed two of their kicks to hand Super Falcons victory in the highly entertaining encounter.
The Super Falcons have conceded just once in four games in the competition and scored 22 goals.
Head coach of the team, Thomas Dennerby believes winning the WAFU Cup
will be a good reward for their endeavour in the competition.
“The competition has been quite interesting and it has been a great experience for the Super Falcons. Against the Ivorians, we will play our normal game, approach things calmly and take our chances,”Dennerby told Nff . com.
“Winning the Cup would be good for the girls’ spirit and just reward for their endeavour here. It would also significantly motivate and spur those members of the team who will be going with us to the FIFA World Cup final camp in Austria on Monday.”
The Falcons are due back in Nigeria on Sunday, while the delegation to the FIFA World Cup final camp in Austria will depart Nigeria on Monday night.
