Woodland To Adopt Aggressive Approach

Woodland To Adopt Aggressive Approach

Overnight leader Gary Woodland says he will not be holding back in Sunday’s final Sentry Tournament of Champions round.

After shooting back-to-back 67’s over the first two days in Hawaii, world number 31 Woodland carded a five-under-par 68, which included an eagle at the par-five 15th, on Saturday to maintain his three-shot lead.

The American, who is chasing his fourth PGA Tour title, has held the 54-hole lead on the US circuit six times in stroke-play events during his career but has failed to convert any of them.

Woodland is hoping to change that statistic on Sunday and has vowed to keep his aggressive style of play. “Tomorrow I’ve got to go out and play aggressive,” he was quoted as saying by pgatour.com. “I’m playing well enough where I don’t have to play conservative.

I can attack and continue to trust what I’m doing and should be good.”
Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, who has not won since March 2018, is the closest challenger after he also signed for a five-under 68 to move to -14 for the tournament, leaving him three shots off the pace.

Australian Marc Leishman is a further stroke back on -13 whilst American pair Xander Schauffele and Bryson DeChambeau are on -12.
