Ecuador President Daniel Noboa has declared Friday a national holiday following La Tri’s famous 2-1 win over Germany.
The victory confirmed Ecuador’s place in the knockouts as one of the best eight third-placed teams.
The South Americans have reached the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for only the second time in their history, matching their historic achievement at Germany 2006.
Ecuador Rallied To Beat Germany
Sebastian Beccacece’s side, who picked up just one point from their opening two games, fell behind after only two minutes when Leroy Sane fired home from Florian Wirtz’s lay-off.

Ecuador hit back seven minutes later through Nilson Angulo, who calmly slotted past Manuel Neuer after being played through by Pablo Vite.
Gonzalo Plata then netted the decisive goal 13 minutes from time to seal a memorable victory for Ecuador.
Noboa Celebrates Historic Victory
In a post on X, Noboa hailed the players and coaching staff for rising above the criticism and adversity to secure the historic victory.
“Thanks to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults and the difficult moments they endured, managed to bounce back and bring this immense joy to the entire country. Tomorrow is a holiday! Long live Ecuador!” he wrote.
