2021 AFCON: Nigeria Dealt Blow As Osimhen Tests Positive For Covid-19

Napoli have announced that their striker Victor Osimhen won’t return to Italy as he tested positive for COVID before boarding from Nigeria.

Osimhen is in Nigeria’s squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The 23-year-old was expected to return to Naples to assess his cheekbone injury on Friday.

He had been ruled out for three months following the injury, but later received green light from doctors to resume training.

However, the swab test he underwent in Nigeria before boarding on Thursday (today) came back positive, so the forward didn’t leave his native country.

“SSC Napoli announces that the player Victor James Osimhen tested positive, asymptomatic, at Covid-19 during the execution of the swab before the trip to Italy, where a check-up by Prof. Tartaro was scheduled for tomorrow,” reads a statement on the club’s website.

” Consequently, the local authorities have ordered the isolation of the player and the check-up will be rescheduled after the negativization and his return to the community.”

Osimhen had already tested positive for COVID one year ago, when he returned to Nigeria to celebrate his birthday.

  • This guy need prayers o. Speedy recovery.

  • This dude is gradually feeling up our news space with negativity. I think he needs urgent help so his career won’t crash.

  • I guess they will let him be now. It’s a big miss for the Super Eagles but I believe with the players we have we can have a successful Afcon without Osimhen.

There is so much covid in Nigeria but we don’t show symptoms..

Na scam, how long has he been in Nigeria?

      • Scam how? So Nigeria doctor scamming Nigeria. Or what? I think you didn’t read the message but just the headline, the test was conducted in Nigeria and not in Napoli where your scam would have been possible.

When we talk about why Osimhen should just skip the Afcon due to his many recent mishaps, dem go dey postulate conspiracy theories. Even that Dr Strange will rubbish the reports of a fellow surgeon who says Osimhen needs months to recover. My prayers are with him. He should go into self isolation and report to Napoli immediately afterwards rather than link up with the Super Eagles for Afcon. The young chap needs serious introspection and prayers. The pressure to balance playing for Nigeria against acting outside clinical advise of a reputable surgeon might be too much for him at this time. Osimhen has years ahead of him. He should flee from parochial advice, short term sentimental thinking and jealousy some fans have against foreign entities (like Napoli) which makes them wallow in conspiracy theories of their own construct.

  • But other news are reporting something difference. What i know oyinbo no want osi in afcon.

419 format. NFF do your testing and since he is still in Nigeria, he should join his peer in Abuja after all Napoli is not expecting him now. It is blessing I’m disguise.

  • Michel 2 years ago

They should bring in ademola lookman now to replace him,he can just sit out this one,it’s not his luck to be at afcon.since some guy came back to the team, this guy has been having all kinds of problem

  • This Napoli chess game is tight. They’re like “Shebi you say you must play Afcon abi after our initial 3-month break announcement? No stress. We don tey for this game. We know how to checkmate people like you without too much noise. Without your knowledge, we have plans A, B, C, D… Even Z. Let’s go there nah!”

Osimhen, osimhen listen! Leave naija cruz face your career for Napoli, na beg i dey beg you, you get potential like mbappe, but your career no start like am, ehn ground done solid, yours never solid, see dembele. Abeg, this stuff i see on twitter osimhen, its not bad, but i hope these tweets or Twitter posts are not products of the way he lives his life, cruz cruz cruz, abeg oo, na those guys wey dey encourage you to cruz go first dump you when you career begin dey backslide, free women, free to much party, and useless outings, football is not only about the body, mind follow join, if na women and party dey full your mind, how you wan take concentrate for football? Infact, who are osimhen’s advisers? They are doing a poor job

NFF has between now and midnight GMT to alter their submitted list. They better bring in Dessers for Osimhen, Akpoguma for Ndah and Amoo or Alhassan for Shehu now, than go to Cameroon with half fit players

    • JimmyBall 2 years ago

Akpoguma for Ndah… so that Algeria will use him to catch cruz again? The sooner you resign to fate that Olisah Ndah has come into the squad to stay… the better for your sanity. Why did you not call for Dessers to replace Ahmed Musa who was not only inactive and getting called up, but was also at the time clubless.

      • BigCole 2 years ago

@Jimmyball, I am a South African based and I can tell you that Ndah is not fit to be honest, he was substituted at half time in the Orlando Pirates last 3 games and he has missed their last 2 games

        • JimmyBall 2 years ago

Victor Osimhen too is not yet fit… he has not been ruled out of AFCON yet. Whatever the deal… Ndah is a squad member and even the selectors know he is a cover… same way Akpoguma would have been just a cover also.

So, if it is minimal muscle problems then there is enough time to recover and who knows if his club was not acting precautionary, since he is now an asset too and they will want his profile and stock to rise seeing they will be making a kill from future transfer of the player.

    • JimmyBall 2 years ago

you are the only from whom we have heard a thin news of Olisah Ndah being unfit… I am yet to see that news anywhere online…

    • Dr. Drey 2 years ago

So it it your Ndah that togolese homebased molested back-to-back within the same week, the Ndah that has contributed 6 out of the 8 goals pirates has conceded in 13 starts, is the one Algeria will not use to catch cruz……LMAOooo. Not everybody is a cheap liar like you….go and find out why he was subbed off at half time in the league game vs Mamelodi Sundowns and hasnt played any game since then…..LMAOooo. You will tell us if Ahmed Musa was injured when he was getting call ups….LMAOooo.

I still cant phantom how human beings speak without thinking….LMAoooo

      • JimmyBall 2 years ago

hahahaha… as if Akpoguma the bundesliga stalwart did not have his sails vigorously buffeted by homebased players from Sierra Leone leading to 4-0 rally back? Ndah may be a palyer based on the continent but he is as of now, more suitable to what the new sheriff… Eguaveon wants based on man wey know…

        • Dr. Drey 2 years ago

The last time we checked, Akpoguma was not tugging down the S/leoneans, conceding penalties of, coping red cards to our detriment.

The fact that your new sheriff even deems it fit to smuggle an injured player who needed trials to sign in the South African league and who wouldn’t make a list of top 40 Nigerian players is a proof of how things have already started degenerating in our football.

South African league over Bundesliga/Europa League
South African league over Scottish PL/Europa League

The man really know true true…..LMAOoooo

We are now back in the era of “WILD CARD” selections….LMAOooo.

And bribery from second division players in Spain. While omitting Lookman who broke Liverpool’s hearts yesterday.

  • GLORY 2 years ago

OSIMENEGOALS is going to AFCON. Mirrage only stop the faint hearted from driving under a “bright sunny” day, thinking the mirrage is large river; and as such, they never get to any destination choosing to only travel when the sunset, by which time everything is packing up.

Isolation is only for 10days and that serves two main positive purposes which I won’t mention here on public forum. But everything points to favouring Osimene’s AFCON appearance. TO GOD ALMIGHTY BE THE GLORY AND PRAISE. GOD BLESS OSIMENEGOALS, GOD BLESS ALEXANDER THE KING IWOBI, GOD BLESS ALL DESERVING SE PLAYERS N GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

  • Michael Adelami 2 years ago

Covid 19 requires only 10 days of Isolation and this will end on the 10th of January. Our first match is on the 11th I think, so he can still start in the second match.

  • Harlyis 2 years ago

He will only miss Napoli match against Juve….
Covid-19 isolation period is 10 days. By 8th of January, Osimhen should be a available for the SE 11th January against the pharaoh of egypt. NFF should be all around him.

  • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

Mehn….I just came off the YouTube space mehn. Where I just finished watching all Osimhe’s exciting goals and play for the super eagles and all I could do and say was look up to the sky ans say Thank you GENERAL ROHR for giving this guy a chance and a break in the team…

But it’s so unfortunate now that we are battling to see him play at the Afcon.

  • If VO is actually confirm COVID-19 positive, then he sure gat know business going to the AFCON anymore, he will surely lack match fitness, if he can’t even train with the group considering he has been inactive for club as well for more than a month, COVID is a valid reason to let him be rather than the unnecessary Napoli doctor telling us false report.

  • Field Marshall. General. Sir Johnbob 2 years ago

A little confusing, nevertheless we sit and observe..

  • Edoman 2 years ago

People, live Osimhen aloneooooooooo. Beg Lookman or Amoo to replace him now now ooooo.

  • Breaking news, Osimhen could train in isolation.

  • Osimhen is yet to play a competitive game in weeks, he hasn’t had contact football since his injury and he is currently being reported as having contacted covid and some of you are jumping up and down rejoicing that he will be in isolation for 10 days and will then be ready to face Egypt the next day. Seriously! I cant believe this what im reading. Must he be at the Afcon at all cost and at great risk to personal well being?
