Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has congratulated Nigeria’s Flamingos following their qualification to the semi-final at this year’s FIFA U-17 women’s World Cup in India.
In Friday’s quarter-finals the Flamingos edged out Favourites USA 4-3 on penalties after 90 minutes of football ended 1-1.
Omamuzo Edafe gave the Flamingos the lead from the penalty spot in the 26th minute before USA equalized through Amalica Villarreal on 40 minutes.
This is the second time a Nigerian women’s team will defeat an American side at any level.
The first time was in the quarter-finals of the 2010 U-20 World Cup in Germany, with the Falconets also winning via penalty shootout after extra-time ended 1-1.
And reacting to the win against the USA U-17 women’s team, Plumptre wrote on her Twitter handle:“Onto the semis!!! Well done girls! 🇳🇬👊🏽.”
The Flamingos will now face either Columbia or debutant Tanzania in the semi-final on Wednesday, 26 October.

I am not sure you watched this game at all because if you did, you would realize that it was a fantastically disjointed performance by 9ja. We couldn’t even complete 2,3 passes before we turn it over to the American girls. Nevertheless, kudos to the team for the SF qualification but the going can only get tougher from here.

A typical Nigerian way of judging situations. We are usually ahead of ourselves in making conclusions about matters. Congrats to the girls for their grit and determination. But our local coaches are still completely off the mark. Believe me.

Congratulations goes to the girls for self believing. For those of us that watch the game would have agree with me that the team lack deficiency and cohesion. No pattern of play, no confidence and lack tactical input. Flamingoes won the game as a result of luck. USA were far better than Nigeria with confidence and individual skills. The team’s lack 0f cohesion in the middle of the pack is largely due to lack proper preparation. We need to look at thst as well. You can’t put a group of girls together two weeks to a tournament and expect them to do well. Technically, the team is good but without any doubt, the Americans were better

i still wonder what they practise in training because at times i wonder why its difficult to put passes right , hit targets or even clear the ball instead of passing wrongly. The problems is with the coaches . an average coach will perform magic with this team , the technical team seem to be bereft of modern football movement. except for Siasia all our local coaches have problem with organising their team positioning with or without the ball and i think this is why we mostly lose to better teams.

I was very sure we will win the game as I posted few days ago.Sincerely I believe in playing badly and winning than gathering all the statistics and losing.Today the girls were hunted by the quarter finals ghost that have trailed them in the past.They were just ready not to concede and defended until they were gasping for breathe and it paid off.They will sure play their game and better in the semis.As the injured players would have fully recovered.

Na waaoo! anytime Nigeria played well and lose, we will say the other team was tactically better, but if our teams didn’t completely play well as expected but win their game, we are not tactically better. The point is the Americans were the better side and were expected to win, but the Nigerian coach was tactically better; the flamengoes allowed them to play but neutralized their shooting abilities near the box, that’s why the American girls found it difficult to shoot properly. Some people questioned the penalty given to the flamengoes, this is due to ignorance of the rule, if one leg is inside the box when the foul is committed, tha’s a penalty, and tha’s the rule. As for the replay of the penalty,the American goalkeeper came off the line to catch the ball, that should be replayed according to the rule. As a Nigerian – American, i support America in soccer,just as i support Nigeria, in this situation, the American girls blew their chances, there no excuses; let us congratulate the flamengoes for stopping such a team as the U.S team and stop complaining.
I am amazed with what am seeing here.Folks seems to forget that the most important statistics in a football match is the final scores.if you like play the most attractive and sexy football, if the final scores is not in your favour, you have just wasted your time. A year from now, it is the final score that will be talked about, no one will remember that the US was the better team.
I must commend the Nigerian coach for his tactical and technical approach to the game.He knew the American were batter, lady for lady, so he set up a formation that restricted the Americans from shooting from afar largely.To ease the pressure on his defense, he should have played a two ladies defensive midfielders and also played a ball carrier that can dribble and hold on to the ball whilst her team transition from defensive to attacking formation and vice versa.
We should not criticize him.He played to his team strengths and won, that is all that matters.
And for those doubting the ages of these girls, they are truly young.More than 90% of them are in JSS or SS1 in secondary schools in Minna, suleja, Abuja and keffi.The coach is a grassroot coach in Minna.Na suffer make them dey look like that oh
The NFF working with Oshoala,Rasidat,Onome and Plumptre should help in getting at least 6 members of this U17 and U20 team each to clubs abroad.That way, the can develop properly and the future of the super Falcons secured
