2022 U-20 WWC: Falconets Look To Maintain Superiority Over South Korea

Nigeria’s Falconets will be back in action later today (Sunday) at the ongoing FIFA U-20 women’s World Cup in Costa Rica when they will take on Group C leaders South Korea.

The game will take place inside the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto, Alajuela, at 9pm Nigerian time.

Both teams got their campaign off to a perfect start with the Falconets edging France 1-0 while South Korea overcame Canada 2-0.

The Coach Christopher Danjuma-led side had the Video Assistant Referee to thank in their game against the French following a foul on Falconets keeper Omini Oyono.

Then with five minutes left Flourish Sabastine emerged the hero as she ran on to a through pass before slotting past the opposition keeper.

This is the third time the Falconets and South Korea will meet in the history of the U-20 women’s World Cup.

The last time the Falconets faced South Korea at this level was in the group stage in the 2014 edition.

Just like today’s meeting, It was also in their second group game with the Falconets triumphing 2-1.

Inspired by five-time Africa women’s Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala, the Falconets went all the way to the final only to lose 1-0 to Germany.

Their first meeting was at the 2012 tournament in Japan, the Falconets secured a 2-0 win in the group stage thanks to goals from Ngozi Okobi and Desire Oparanozie.

Now both team’s path have crossed again with a win for either side sealing passage into the quarter-finals.

And speaking ahead of the game, Danjuma stated that his team is geared up for Sunday’s task.

“When you win your first match it gives you the courage, strength to want to approach the second match not with a lot of caution but you know when you are able to wrap up in the second game, crossing the group is as good as done. So we are all geared up and God willing we will go and win South Korea,” he said in a short video interview published on the Super Falcons Twitter handle.

“Pressure can be positive or negative but it is a positive one based on what we’ve seen in the first game. Everyone is keen and interested in this team so we want to go there and do well against (South Korea).”

It won’t be an easy ride against South Korea because, South Korean team is technically and tactically sound and the Korean team won their first game as well but with God, determination and focus, Falconets can do it.

What Super Eagles, Super Falcons and Flying Eagles have failed to achieve, Falconets can do much better and what our foreign coaches have failed to do, our own can do much more better. Good luck to our ladies in today’s match. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!

Have we qualified?I think the group is still open should Canada defeat both France and Nigeria and Korea getting the better of France then we have three teams on 6 points.

Leave that one for the mathematicians,at least let’s not be pessimistic,in a year when not a lot is celebrated football-wise in Nigeria, these performances by the Falconets should be praised irrespective of what’s to come.

These Nigerians girls are going to be extremely hard to beat in this Competition. The Ghanaian women are coming home very soon. You could see how fat their bottom is. Can’t run well with that, l might add. Ha ha ha.

  • OMG! These girls are outstanding, I didn’t regret staying up late to watch the match, they showed class. What a goal.
