2022 WAFCON Qualifiers: Leicester Hail Plumptre On Debut Win With Super Falcons

Leicester City hailed Ashleigh Plumptre after she made a winning start on her competitive debut for the Super Falcons of Nigeria inside the Moshood Abiola stadium in Abuja on Friday.

Plumptre saw action for 90 minutes and gave a five-star performance as the Falcons beat Cote d’Ivoire 2-0 in the first-leg final round qualifier for this year’s women’s AFCON.

A goal in each half from American-born Ifeoma Onumonu secured the win for the reigning WAFCON champions.

And reacting to the win, Leicester wrote on their women’s Twitter handle:”A win and clean sheet for @ashplumptre on her Nigeria debut! 💪”

Plumptre will hope to make it two wins out of two when the Falcons travel to Abidjan for the return leg on Tuesday.

The winner between the Falcons and Cote d’Ivoire will qualify for the 2022 WAFCON,  which will also serve as qualifiers for the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Really proud of this young lady. Nigerians didn’t know her, but she searched and found us. If that is not love!!

  • From the clip I saw, she was really given a tough time by the ivory coast wingers. Hope she gets better and stronger with time.

I doubt she is a fullback for her club I think it was a makeshift probably because Onome Ebi plays in the same position so she was moved to play left back.
I didn’t see the game but from highlights I wasn’t impressed by her performances. She struggled.
Though you can’t judge a player after five minutes highlight.

Yea, she did struggle, but for Onumonu’s 2 goals, she was by miles the woman of the match. The Ivorians apparently did their homework well to note that she was new to the environment and would not adjust quite easily so they focused their attacks through her flank.

Its normal for her to struggle in the Abuja heat on a February afternoon….the air is thinner and hotter and more humid. If a full bred Nigerian can struggle to breathe for a few days upon landing in Abuja from Europe, then be rest assured it’ll take some time to get used to for the lass.

A quality addition to the SF by all ramifications. At least we get to gradually replace our ageing backline gradually. Hopefully Onyinyechi Zogg will also get to come in and combine with her in defense to rekindle the famed oyinbo wall in the SF too.

Absolutely,@Dr Drey the weather is a factor besides that was her first official game for Nigeria nerve as well could play a part.
However, she needs a few more games to get used to how football is played in Africa.
I believe she will come good. She is highly rated in England a quality addition indeed.
I would love to see her play in her natural central defence but the likes of Ebi has to make way for sprightly youthful additions.
