2022 WCQ: Siasia Faults Super Eagles List For Ghana Clash

Former Nigeria international Samson Siasia has faulted the Super Eagles 25-man list for this month’s crucial 2022 World Cup qualifiers against the Black Stars of Ghana.

Last week, interim coach Austine Eguavoen released the names of the 25 players invited for the two legged games while seven players are on stand-by.

Among those named in the 25-man squad are Akinkunmi Amoo and Ademola Lookman who got a maiden call-up and long term injury absentee Oghenekaro Etebo.

While Ogenyi Onazi, who has not been invited to the Eagles for almost over two years, was named on the standby list.

But in his reaction, former Eagles coach Siasia posited that it is not the right list.

“You need to play people that understand themselves if you bring new ones it becomes difficult for them to understand themselves and play the partner you want to play,” he said on Brila FM.

“For me it’s not the right decision to bring new players, you are better off with the ones you know already that have been playing together and understand themselves because you have three days to practice before you go to Ghana. So for me this is not the right list.“

The first leg between the Black Stars and the Eagles will hold on 25th March in Cape Coast while the reverse fixture will take place four days later in Abuja.

  • No Eusebio! We have deepest respect for you as a top coach and our former intertional player, but SiaOne,permit me to disagree with you on this one. There are only three(3) new and uncapped players on the main list of 25 players invited for the Ghana game. They include Calvin Bassey(Glasgow Rangers,Scotland),Ademola Lookman(Leicester City,England) and Akinkunmi Amoo(FC Copenhagen, Denmark) and based on current form, three of them merit their call ups and there is nothing wrong in their gradual integration into the Super Eagles fold. The rest of the invitees have been part of the Super Eagles set up for some time now. Let’s hope they will get the results we all want against our arch-rivals,the Black Stars of Ghana. God bless you ,SiaOne.

  • And this is the reason why you are not the current coach of SE.. so you don’t even know that AFCON we took a team depleted with about % or 6 injuries so what are you talking Mr Siasia also Alex Iwobi is suspended so it only makes sense to replace him with another Vibrant player. SO Mr Siasia please don’t try misguide and Mislead the coach. THank you.

  • If we must fault the list of Super Eagles invitees for the Ghana clash, then players like Abdullahi Shehu,Oghenekaro Etebo,Ahmed Musa,Daniel Akpeyi and perhaps Odion Ighalo should not be in the 25-man team. But coaches Augustine Eguavoen and Emmanuel Amuneke know the players who will help them prosecute their plans and tactics against Ghana .For now we can only keep our fingers crossed and watch what happens in the two games(home and away).

  • Ako AMADI 2 years ago

Don’t understand Siasia! Modern football at the national team level does not require players to camp and play together every day like in club football. Besides an invitation of a new player to the Super Eagles is not a guarantee that he is in the starting XI.

  • That is your opinion ho Mr siasia not ours.

Last week you were craving for eze, if eze had agreed to play for us and invinted then the list will be ok abi.

I hope this is not cannibalism sha? I just hope so cause you are a well respected man.

  • Michel 2 years ago

This is what bribe taking can cause ,I know u would have taken bribe to invite players

    • Aiwekhoe Omoba 2 years ago

I strongly agree with you SIR.. this Siasia can collect bribe very well, no wonder FIFA suspended him. Mr Siasia finish Ur Ban plz plZ. Don’t cause problem

      • Edoman 2 years ago

If you listen to Siasia, then you a bribe taker. As you see him so, na bribe kill am. He is trying to attract attention to himself as if he is still one of those clean individuals among the good Nigerians.

  • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

Oga Siasa all this beating around the bush is not necessary! Just go straight and fault the invitation of Amoo, Dennis and lookman on the list simple!!

Bayelsa people too like long story.. LMFAO!!!

    • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

They are the new ones(and more) on the list from the AFCON R16 exit..

I get the point you are trying to make(Mr Siasia). And it is only great minds like us that can understand what Chemistry means to a team…

      • My Friend Will you shut your Monkey mouth Dere!!!.. So you and Siasia want Eguavoen to fail for your different selfish Reasons. Siasia so he can becoame coach and say I told you so and start collecting bribe to invite useless players and, you @MONKEY BRAIN so you can start clamouring for the reinstatement of your Dumbo Roar!!! everytime you comment I cringe so you and you block head did not know that AFCON Nigeria was depleted with already 6 key players for different reasons i.e. injuries and club refusals 3 of whom are Really experience and key to our cause in any event? and, have been rightfully recalled as thier inclusion will add the much needed we were lacking in AFCON and which coach in their Right mind will leave out a Calvin Bassey from their team? on current form. You had better start accepting that your Dumbo Roar is gone and HE AINT coming back Lol!!!!.

        • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

LMFAO! Wake up boy from your slumber @Ugo Iwunze LMFAO! Eguavon has already failed. LMFAO! Am only waiting for the failure to be official against Ghana on the 25 and 29.. LMFAO!!

      • and this is why I call you @MONKEY BRAIN because you can’t even realise that What Siasia is implying is that your God Ighalo should not be there. So where do you even stand @MONKEY BRAIN??.. Because clearly over contradiction Full your mumu Body.

        • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

LMFAO! @Ugo Iwunze am not surprised cos you have a shallow brain like a lizard so I don’t expect you to read deep. LMFAO! If you are, then you know that Siasia is talking about the team chemistry..And you and I knows that Ighalo is not knew to the way the SE plays.. He understands the team chemistry.. no be all these your British/ Nigerian newbies.. LMFAO!!

          • What team chemistry?? Did you see amy team chemistry in AFCON? was it not clear that the missing KEY! players affected our game?? Siasia knowing some Nigerian mentality cannot gather that AFCON was not our strongest Line up by any stretch of the immagination. If anything CEREZO has made this team much Stronger this is the Kind of List We Nigerians expect to see. Siasia is riding on Cerezo enginuity It was Cerezo who had already spoke to Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze before sia1 cane out to say we Need EZE Cerezo already had the meetings 2 weeks before that. Cerezo is the reason Lookman switch was finally done we flew to meet him he went to watch Bassey and Co long ago. Cerezo even in Early 2000’s as coach then always selected players on Merit he has always done so. so you had better Support him or shut the hell up!!!. And we are not loosing to Ghana with this squad Forget it My friend!!!. Don’t be suprised to see either Eze or olise coming in as they have said it is too late for switch to be done now but if we make it 1 or 2 might be drafted in Cerezo is a good coach and with this list and Amunike and Cerezo combined head in the dougout we will do better that Dumbo Roar!!

  • Chidiomimi 2 years ago

If you give 100 coaches the privilege of assembling players, chances are there that we will see 100 different lists of players. I feel it is too early to say that the crop of players invited is not it. Trust me, what Nigeria is doing is similar to what Ghana is also doing. Ghana is looking for new players that can replace the old. I feel that is part of the reason their list is not out yet.

  • Hmmm…I can list some names in present Super eagles squad that even if they keep receiving call ups, they won’t play and if they do, they won’t have any impact. So I believe it’s better to call new players to replace those.
    Sia 1, be careful!

  • Alphonsus Gbefumu 2 years ago

Yeah, that is true Yinkus. It was exactly 6 days ago Samson Siasia asked coach Eguavoen to extend call-up to Crystal Palace midfielder, Eberechi Eze to solve creativity problem in the midfield, now we have an Amoo to do that. So what have changed?

  • Even if we get chance, we go even add more to those 3 self.
Dessers, Ejaria, Bonke, Olise still dey.
Even ..keepers like Adeleye, Atubolu etc still dey.
We go even call Eze, call , Solanke, adarabioyo, Billing, Bazee, Chukwuemeka, Madueke etc if Dem ready, pls join me call names I beg! Anybody wey Sabi complain make him continue

  • Joe Odudu 2 years ago

Na bad belle dey worry Samuson Siasia, always looking for how to pull down his contemporaries. This is not his first time and mightn’t be the last.

We didn’t hear any ‘pem from Samuson when CAF declared the Super Eagles coach, the best coach of the group stage in afcon 21. People like him started making noise the moment Austin’s Eguavoen strikers failed him in Cameroon.

    • dtouchbearer 2 years ago

Nff to query eguavoen for invitation of onazi on standby list.Source :owngoal.com.. I think mr eguavoen should be very careful

      • Joe Odudu 2 years ago

That’s very ok for the nff to discuss with their employee and not Samuson who is even banned by FIFA. Apart from that, if he really wants to advise the Technical Adviser, he should call him up or a private email could have done that. Everything about Samuson siasia drips of bad belle, as you can see.

    • FatherJP 2 years ago

For all your beautiful work….(I am with you 75% on the original list) you still NEVER had a SPACE in any of your expanded lists to accomodate the most PROFILIC NIGERIAN STRIKER IN TOP 5 LEAGUES with 10 GOALS??? Haba! What offence did TAIWO AWONIYI commit that you found no space for him in your almost 40+ man list?

AWONIYI played 3 games in CAMEROON…his scorecard reads:

      1 goal
      1 assist
1 pre assist (that goal scored by SIMON was from him displacing or rather disrupting the CB)

Even only game under ROHR he had a point blank save from GK. Shows his predatory instincts.

Another person is INNOCENT BONKE is more experienced and SOLID than RAPHAEL ONYEDIKA. SWEDEN stright to first team in FRANCE is no mean feat please.

Great list all the same bro

@LARRY, as usual you always earn my plaudits and respect! You surely and Clearly know the game and are always devoid of sentiments and bias.

Perfect list. Nothing to add or subtract. The only 2 missing from @HILLARY which I responded to were adequately covered by your goodself!

You cant keep BONKE out and invite ETEBO and ONAZI and SHEHU.

Just like only a MAD coach in saner climes will leave AWONIYI out of a 23 man squad. He is currently NIGERIA’S BEST STRIKER in EUROPE…STATISTICS WISE ni o!

      • Bonke is just good on paper because he plays in france at the moment and has played for the Super Eagles once or twice.
If Raphael is given a chance I feel he will be more effective in the mf than bonke and frank combined.
There is more to his game than just bruising players, sliding tackles etc.
He has good range of passing, is comfortable in moving with the ball and has good height. Reminds me of sunday oliseh.
I don’t trust either Frank or bonke in the absence of ndidi.
Alhassan yusuf is another player who deserves a look in.

      • FatherJP,thank you for your kind words.Thank you for your superb and expert analysis. I deliberately left out Taiwo Awoniyi from my wish list for some reasons. No doubt the FC Union Berlin of Germany striker is one of our best but I was glued to my television set during the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations in neighbouring Cameroon and must confess that he is not my type of striker for games as important and explosive as the forthcoming fixtures against the Black Stars. He missed a lot of begging scoring chances even when Coach “Cerezo” stuck to him as our main striker in the absence of Victor Osimhen. You can watch the clip of the only goal he managed to score at the AFCON and you will see it could have been recorded for another player and not Awoniyi. He reminds me of great players in the past like Jonathan Akpoborie,Richard Owubokiri ,Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Benedict Akwuegbu who thrived at their European club sides but did not click much in our national colours. All the same Taiwo Awoniyi is a great player in his own right,no doubt. Just that he is very much predictable to opposing defenders .Umar Sadiq ,despite the criticisms coming his way, is more slippery and dangerous than Taiwo. My humble thoughts though.

      • Larry 2 years ago

@Father JP, glad to earn your recognition. Actually, your flawless analysis remains one of the best comments I’ve ever come across on this forum..
Some of us try as much to always remain objective and detribalized. You ask them why the name of the highest scorer in top 5 leagues in Europe is not considered, they tell you because of the game with SE. But when you look at the record and the games critically, you find out that the same player was the most exciting and outstanding behind Simon. Simon and Awoniyi played really well at AFCON, Chukwueze was below par but his name will come-up. Nacho didn’t fare better than Awoniyi at AFCON, Nacho was one of thevreadons we list to Tunisia.. He didn’t do his job.

  • Siasia must respect himself otherwise he gets the rough edges of our tongues. Was he not the person banned by FIFA On 16 August 2019 from football game for life, following a match-fixing investigation? He should just go and find somewhere to sit down joor.

    • Edoman 2 years ago

If you listen to Siasia, then you a bribe taker. As you see him so, na bribe kill am. He is trying to attract attention to himself as if he is still one of those clean individuals among the good Nigerians. He is like a dead man walking.

I laugh in spanish, the same sia1 that called up new players during his tenure is now saying new players should not be injected into the squad.

Perhaps, he wants them to fail so he can have a crack at the job. There is nothing wrong in having new players in the team, if they have ability.

  • Igbekun Abo 2 years ago

This list is not that bad but Onazi should play more football before coming to the Super Eagles.
Za Za Za Za Za Za!!!

  • This is one of the ex player that have the ball. That is why I will forever back Rohr. See, that is one of the reason most of those ex player can not manage our national team. Imagine a coach trying to dance to the tune of every fans by following their useless rant. This was the same way he alluded to their wish on inviting Nwakali,Sadiq and starting Awoniyi prior to Nations cup and also dancing to the tune of playing pattern without any logical input as a coach from him. We all know where that left us. It’s only in Nigeria where ordinary football fans will be telling a professional coach who and who players to be invited and the mumu coach just follow suit. How can you invite a whole different team mostly new and players who have been out of the team for a very long time for a very important match like this when you are just coming from a competition where your team perform woefully and your excuse was not having enough time with the team. Why not the same team with maybe few new addition to complement your slick good football they said you played in other to make the team bonding and cohesion more better. He even have guts to tell us inviting Onazi is not his decision when we have already know what is happening. Has anyone ever seen Rohr said this throughout his time has super Eagles coach? That is the difference. Anyway, I wish the team best of luck sha but Eguavon fumble big time. I pray that mistake will not cost us world cup ticket

All the Africa coaches will resign after World Cup beause they corruption is too. With black man as a coach. We can’t go far in world even though we qualify

You cannot express your opinion on a social platform without getting bullied and abused ? you guys should grow up already, normal people reasoned with their head and mot their toes. You guys agreed the coach invited the right players and someone else disagreed, that is how these things works, only empty brains would start abusing someone just because his opinion defers from theirs

    • @Ralph,you’re very correct, bro. You cannot comment on a social platform without being bullied or abused. That said, however, I feel we should learn to respect other people’s views and opinions. That way ,we make this forum more educative, exciting and enjoyable for everyone. Thank you so much. I wish other fans would reason like you.
