2025 AFCONQ: Lookman Eagles Best Player Against Benin  –Aiyenugba

2025 AFCONQ: Lookman Eagles Best Player Against Benin  –Aiyenugba

Former Nigerian goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba has described Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman as the best player against Benin in Saturday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Recall that Nigeria broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime with Lookman’s fine individual effort as he cut in from the wing before striking home.

Osimhen, in his first runout this season after moving from Napoli to Galatasaray on loan last week, swept home the second goal in the 78th minute. He was left unmarked in front of goal and tucked away a deflected cross from Wilfred Ndidi.

Lookman added the third five minutes later with a clever angled header from Moses Simon’s cross as Nigeria gained a measure of revenge for their 2-1 loss in Benin in a World Cup qualifier three months ago.

Reacting to Lookman’s impressive display, the former Enyimba goalkeeper, who was a guest in AfroSports AFCON coverage, stated that he was a constant threat on Benin defence.

“I am really impressed with Ademola Lookman’s impressive display against Benin. He was a constant threat on Benin defence each time he was with the ball.

He knows how to drive the attack and was rewarded with a beautiful brace that he scored. I am not too surprised that he was named among some of the top stars in Europe for the Ballon d’Or award.”

One thing that has dear my heart about Lookman is the way he stays humble all the time . There was a time I was beginning to be irritated by his calmness misjudging it as lack of commitment. He never brags but does his talk on the field.
Same goes to Aina, Iwobi , Ajayi in fact most of this foreign players are just calm , only local players are aggressive and talks carelessly.
That shows we Nigerian parents have a lot to teach our children to stay humble and let not pride cut them short in the middle of their fame.
I use to have this misconception that players raised abroad or born abroad are rude and disrespectful until I also started leaving with them , then I realized back home we are too cruel in the way we teach our children . This cruelty makes our children wicked the moment they have financial freedom not only that our method of parenting has put fear into our children that even when they see evil being perpetrated they won’t talk all in the name of respect and this permeates our society these days .

Point of correction: Are many of the children burned abroad, very respected in society?

How many years have you spent abroad, if I may ask?

Don’t say what you don’t know young man.
You are among those who believe anything from Africa is bad.

The most dangerous place in the whole universe to raise children is abroad. I know many of you people on this platform stay abroad and I know you understand what I mean. Don’t put out the wrong information. You can’t tell me what I know kę.

Can’t you see that many Nigerian parents bring their kids to Nigeria for home training?

If you are talking about calmness, it all depends on personality, parents and the kids themselves.

Are Ndidi, Nda, Nacho, Mutiu Adepoju, Kanu, Okocha, Peter Rufai, and Ike Shorunmu, to name the least, not calm enough?

The African parents teach their kids when to talk and how to react to any situation, but over there, some do, but not all of them.

If what you said is true why single parents is too much abroad?

I thank God that I am an African man, and I am proud of Africa.

If you say the level of the conference children burned can’t be compared to children burned abroad, I may partially agree with you but not all the
      African children are not confident.

People born and raised in western countries are polite and respectful..Those from third world countries can be rude and lack manners..
I love both..But I am more at ease with the former..

    • Kenny 4 weeks ago

      Iwobi is not humble.

  • Sam Ade 4 weeks ago

Yes, of course most of the players that comes from abroad are very humbled and calmly. They take life simple those players from abroad either England or Europe. I love them all!

  • Lookman Ademola is just in a world of his own. One of the most cerebral players in the presently constituted senior national team. Calm and focused! And I think there’s a lot other players need to learn from him and Semi Ajayi in they way and manner he conducts themselves on and off the field.
His football has grown in leaps and bounds from the time he joined the national team and this is quite reflective in his performance at the last AFCON in January. And this also goes without saying that his transitioning to the Italian serie A has made a huge impact in his game couple with his achievements with the Italian side, Atalanta in the Uefa cup, snatching a 3 -0 victory in the final against highly fancied Bayer Leverkusen, scoring all the 3 goals.

  • Yes Lookman is a good player. But one thing is clear about him, he has become a selfish player. Many of you will not see this aspect of him now. It is when his selfishness cost us matches that you all will start calling for his head.
The way Lookman plays selfishly these days in the super eagles is not the same way he plays at Atalanta.
Lookman needs to be called to order. So he can play more for the team rather than for himself.

    • Honestly 4 weeks ago

I noticed that too. Well said

    • ifeanyi 3 weeks ago

Thats a very unfair comment ‘Josh’
Ademola Lookman is not selfish and does play for his team mates.
Is just when he sees and opportunity to score he likes to drive through…He is not just a winger he is more of support striker and has said he admires Sadio Mane game.
Against Benin he sent a lovely cross field long pass with his left foot to Boniface to volley, that Boniface nearly scored with and he provided one of the assists for a 1v1 for Osimhen that was unable to convert.
He is a all around player that plays for his team mates in the Super Eagles and Atalanta.
Even Osimhen has recently said in an interview that he so admires Lookman’s passion and contribution to the Super Eagles and said he has carried the team at times.
Constructive criticism is always important but it is time to debunk this myth that Ademola Lookman is a selfish player…He is not
