FIFA President Gianni Infantino has showered praise on Nigeria’s Flamingos following their historic victory at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Flamingos secured the championship after overcoming Japan’s Little Nadeshiko 2-1 in Saturday’s final at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat.
Nigeria took control of the encounter through goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku, establishing a 2-0 lead before Fuki Ito reduced the deficit for Japan.
Reacting to the triumph, Infantino congratulated the Nigerian team for making history as the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
He described the victory as well deserved and commended the players for their outstanding performance throughout the competition.
“Congratulations to Nigeria, world champion U-17 Women’s World Cup of FIFA here in Rabat. First African team to ever win a (FIFA) Women’s U-17 World Cup — so many congratulations to Nigeria. Well deserved in the final,” Infantino stated.
The FIFA chief also praised Japan for their impressive campaign, congratulating the team on winning the silver medal, while extending recognition to DPR Korea for claiming bronze.
“Congratulations to Japan as well, great tournament, silver medal. And DPR Korea, bronze medalists at this beautiful (FIFA) U-17 Women’s World Cup,” he added.
