The Super Eagles produced an encouraging display despite suffering a narrow 2–1 defeat to Portugal in Wednesday’s international friendly in Leiria, a result that brought an end to head coach Eric Chelle’s unbeaten start in charge of Nigeria.
Pedro Neto handed Portugal the lead before Akor Adams restored parity for Nigeria with a well-taken equaliser in the 37th minute. However, Francisco Conceicao struck late in the game to secure victory for the hosts as they continued preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Okoye’s Reassuring Performance
After a brilliant performance in Nigeria’s 2–2 draw against Poland, Maduka Okoye was again at his best as he made five crucial saves against Portugal in Wednesday’s international friendly.
He notably pulled off a superb close-range stop to deny Bruno Fernandes in the first half and kept the scoreline respectable amid a barrage of Portuguese attacks.
While he conceded twice to goals from Pedro Neto and Francisco Conceição, many attributed them to defensive lapses and unstoppable finishing rather than goalkeeping errors.
The friendly served as a vital preparatory fixture in which Okoye’s shot-stopping ability and composure were thoroughly tested by a star-studded Portuguese attack.
Adams Clinical In Front Of Goal
In the absence of Victor Osimhen, who was excused for personal reasons, Super Eagles striker Akor Adams showed he is capable of filling the void by scoring Nigeria’s equaliser with a composed finish in the 37th minute.
Adams’ goal was the highlight of an impressive display against one of the favourites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After Portugal opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Pedro Neto, Adams spearheaded the Super Eagles’ response. Although Nigeria eventually fell to a 2–1 defeat following Francisco Conceição’s late winner, Adams’ movement and attacking threat remained major talking points. The friendly provided a crucial platform for him to transfer his impressive club form to the international stage.
Iwobi Marks 100th Super Eagles Appearance
Joining the likes of Vincent Enyeama, Ahmed Musa and Joseph Yobo, who have all reached the 100-cap milestone for the senior national team, Alex Iwobi delivered a commendable performance against Portugal despite Nigeria’s 2–1 defeat.
Recall that Iwobi was presented with a commemorative plaque and framed jersey in recognition of his 100th Super Eagles appearance.
Operating in central midfield, he controlled the tempo, linked defence with attack and frequently disrupted Portugal’s counter-pressing tactics.
The Fulham midfielder made his debut for Nigeria in a friendly against DR Congo in Visé, Belgium, on October 8, 2015, after previously representing England at youth level.
Akpan’s Memorable Super Eagles Debut
Making his first appearance for the Super Eagles, KRC Genk left-back Christian Akpan enjoyed a memorable debut. Though a very challenging experience, the youngster worked hard to regularly prevent the duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes from posing more devastating threats.

Portugal’s Dominance In Possession
Portugal dominated possession in their World Cup warm-up clash against Nigeria, controlling 58 per cent of the ball on their way to a 2–1 victory.
Roberto Martínez’s side dictated the tempo for long periods, creating 13 attempts compared to Nigeria’s five.
Despite Portugal’s territorial dominance and sustained pressure, Nigeria remained resilient, posed a threat on the counterattack and capitalised on their limited opportunities.

Under Eric Chelle, Nigerian Super Eagles have an increasing pool of young players, which is quite exciting. The recent addition of Scottish giant defender, Emmanuel Fernandez, Ibrahim Benwene and Chris Akpan and not forgetting Benjamin Fredericks speak volumes.
In the the attack, we’ve seen the introduction of German based Philip Otele and Femi Azeez of Millwall and the potential inclusion of new sensation, …. The name that’s been on the lips of everyone lately. The trio certainly will improve Super Eagles options in the wings. And it was exciting to see the qualities they’ve to offer.
Chelle tactically is strengthening every department of the team and the goalkeeping department is clearly not left out with the recent addition of the former Arsenal’s goalie, Arthur Nwankwo, who stands at 6’6 ft tall, a towering goalkeeper who made remarkable debut during the Unity cup with impressive safes.
Tochukwu Nandi is another exciting youngster who made great impressions during the just concluded Unity Cup. He was rewarded with the Portugal friendly on the strength of his great showings.

Arthur Okonkwo could be a better goalkeeper than Okoye.Time will tell though,because Okoye looks vulnerable,he’s not assured.I know many will disagree with me but this my opinion.I am not satisfied with his performances over the two games.
Conceding 4 goals in two games regardless the opposition doesn’t sit well with me.I know he made some fantastic saves,but if you take a second look at the saves,the balls weren’t placed,rather they were near the post,so they were easy saves,considering it’s easier to score aiming far post than nearer the post.
Apparently,the two goals Portugal scored,the shot were aimed to the far post,just like the Polish second goal also aimed at the far post,but this time from a distance.
I think Okoye can’t dive.Any shot targeted at the far post will beat him easy.This is why I am not comfortable with him as our first choice goalkeeper.
Why am I feeling this is a sign of imminent collapse of the Super Eagles?
You never pointed out any suitable home based players oh knowing hawks around Chelle are forcing him to go home based. And his position now is untenable as his contract has not been talked about.

As it stands now the team loaded in all departments with options except midfield. It’s obvious the Midfield combo of Ndidi and Iwobi is not compact and powerful
. It’s the reason we fail to qualify for the world. In a related issue winger I don’t understand why coach is still inviting us chukueze. So if the coach can fix the Midfield and wings. we can win next AFCON
