AFCON 2021: CAF Confirms Use Of VAR In All 52 Matches

The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) has confirmed the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in all 52 matches of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

This is the first time that the VAR will be used for all matches. Recall that in 2019 in Egypt, CAF started using VAR from the quarterfinals.

However, with CAF advancing with plans not only to improve the image of refereeing but also produce world class match officials in Africa, the implementation of VAR in all 52 matches in Cameroon is a step in the right direction.

A list of 63 top match officials, including women top referees Salima Mukasanga (Rwanda), Carine Atemzabong (Cameroon), Fatiha Jermoumi (Morocco) and Bouchra Karboubi (Morocco) will officiate the TotalEnergies Africa Vup of Nations, Cameroon 2021 matches.

The list consists of 24 referees, 31 assistant referees and eight video assistant referees from 36 countries. The roster includes two referees from the CONCACAF as part of our inter-confederation skills exchange program.

The competition will kick-off on Sunday, 09 January 2022 with hosts Cameroon playing Burkina Faso at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde, Cameroon.

    • It looks very impressive. Thanks Femi. I am feeding off your positive vibes.

    • Very impressed with the movement of the ball……They string together almost 10 passes without the opponent touching the ball even as the opponent was playing with high intensity……..I also noticed wing play which is Nigeria’s most potent weapon……One touch passing too was observed and it shows a great sense of team work……The intensity too was high by SE standard for a training match…….Very good signs

AM JUST WATCHING NIGERIA VS ALGERIA IN THE NATIONS CUP . THIS WILL BE THE SECOND TIME TO WATCH THE MATCH AND I THINK AM IN MY RIGHT SENSE TO REALLY OBSERVED HOW WE PLAYED AGAINST THEM . DUE TO ANXIETY OF THE FRIST TIME I WATCHED I MUST SAY NIGERIA REALLY PLAYED AND EVEN OUTPLAYED THE ALGERIANS IN ALL DEPARTMENT EXCEPT GOAL KEEPING AND THEY WERE LUCKY TO SCORE THAT LAST MINUTE GOAL

I CAN SAY IT IS NOT EASY TO PLAY NIGERIA BECAUSE JUST LIKE BARCELONA STYLE OF PLAY FOOTBALL STICKS TO OUR FEETS MORE THAN IT DOES TO OTHER NATIONS .THE ALGERIANS EVEN CONFIRMED THIS WHEN RAHMEZ SAID THEY KNEW NIGERIA WOULD HAVE BEATEN THEM IF THE GAME WENT ONTO THE EXTRA.
HAVING SAID THIS I MUST SAY ALL THE PLAYERS PLAYED EXCEPTIONALLY WELL BUT ONE PLAYER I SINGLE OUT IS ETEBO ,MEN THAT PLAYER NA REAL FOOTBALLER AND I WILL MISS HIM . HE EVEN PLAYED BETTER THAN NDIDI ,AM AKSO IMPRESSED WITH IWOBI AND IGHALO.
MOST TIMES WE FANS WATCH LIVE FOOTBALL WITH SENTIMENTS THIS IS WHY WE CAN REALLY APPRECIATE THIS TEAM.
ANOTHER ILL COMING IN THIS TEAM IS OUR COACH HE WAS TOO CONSERVATIVE WITH THE ENTERPRISING PLAYERS HE HAD , NIGERIA IS A TEAM THAT WANTS TO EXPRESS AND STRETCH GAMES AGAINST OPPONENTS BUT OUR COACH WILL NOT ALLOW THIS AND IT CAUSED US THE GAME ,THE LITTLE TIME WE CAME OUT TO PLAY THE ALGERIANS WERE CONFUSED ,I KNOW IF VICTOR MOSES WAS IN THAT TEAM NO WAY FOR ALGERIA TO WIN.
NOW BACK TO THE PRESENT EAGLES I THINK AUSTIN THE COACH HAS A VERY GOOD TEAM ON GROUND AND THERE WILL BE NO EXCUSE FOR FAILURE ,OUR BOYS ARE MORE MATURE AND COUPLE WITH FEW ADDED PLAYERS I THINK WE SHOULD GET TO THE SEMI FINAL BARING IN MIND THAT THERE WILL BE 52 MATCHES TO BE PLAYED IF AM RIGHT THE FIRST OF ITS KIND AT ANY NATION CUP.
I CAN TELL YOU THIS CUP IS NOT SURE FOR ANY TEAM ,THE FORMAT IS QUITE DIFFERENT IT WILL TAKE A TEAM THAT TRULY DESERVES IT TO WIN .
APART FROM SENEGAL WHICH I FEAR NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THEIR STARS BUT THE WAY THE PLAY A ROBUST GAME THAT DEFIES PATTERN AND ALSO THE EXPOSURE OF THEIR PLAYERS. EVERY OTHER COUNTRIES WE HAVE 50 50 CHANCE.

Here’s a video of Emmanuel Dennis saying he’s not interested in going to the AFCON. For those blaming everybody. https://t.co/lI6azSExcn

    • Papafem 2 years ago

I’m beginning to suspect that this guy is actually planning to change nationality. Is he really cap-tied? Remember Emmanuel Sarki. He dug up an ancestor from Haiti and played for Les Grenadiers a few years ago when he wasn’t getting any look in from Nigeria. It’s quite unusual for a player who hasn’t played in any high profile international competition to outrightly reject that chance when he knows the world cup is around the corner and Nigeria may likely qualify. There is more to his rejection than we know. This should ultimately end all the noise about Dennis Bonaventure Emmanuel

Thank you @Ayphillydegreat, those LUFWOO guys that always want to blame Rohr for anything that goes wrong in SE will always believe in propaganda instead of analysing the stories logically. You can even see his body language in that video filled with hatred for Nigeria as if he was born overseas

    • Golden Child 2 years ago

@Ayphillydegreat, if you read his demeanor, you will find out that he is hurting and he really does not mean what he said. He did not maintain eye contact, looking away and the tone of his voice dropped some decibel levels.

We need to put it into perspective, this interview was done some months back during a period where gernot rohr freezed him out of the team. I watched a video where Rohr was asked about the invitation of Dennis and rohr was visibly irritated by the question stating he cant invite everybody; which was uncharacteristic of him. prior to that question, they asked him about lookman and ejaria and he calmly responded that he had included them in his famous 40 man list.

The point i am trying to make is that there is an obvious tension between the two and this should not be mistaken for his lack of desire to play for his country. Does he have attitude issues? Absolutely but we should be careful not to throw the baby and the bath water away.

People are different, grew from different backgrounds, backgrounds that shape who we they are now. A good manager will work on him and still get the best out of him. Most talented players can be like this (eccentric), they like to be valued. Eguavoen confirmed in an interview that he wanted to come but Watford must have brought it to his attention that Nigeria obviously do not value him, if they did, they won’t send a late invitation and this might have changed his initial stance.

Players are different, some need a hand around the shoulder, that assurance that they are valued. He appears to me to be that kind of player that if you give him that assurance, he will go to war for you. if he does not feel the love, he will be indifferent. Unfortunately for the lad, he obviously needs a manager. Someone who will help him to be media trained (Osimhen also needs help here).

Another point i want to touch on is the inconsistencies and unfair invitation and selections with respect to the SE Handlers. Despite his form for Watford during the wc qualifiers, why was he omitted? There was a point in one of the qualifiers, a clubless Musa got the nod ahead of the likes of dennis (Not sure if he was even called up). Some will compare him to Ighalo and say Ighalo stayed away from training to push for afcon but the fortunes of their respective clubs differ. One is fighting relegation and the other is fighting for the title. It is obvious which one of the two who will be more desperate.

  • Yea the friendly game ended in a 2 nil scoreline. Two goals to the Super Eagles. Musa and chukwueze the scorers. Coach Eguavoen played a
4-2-3-1 formation with most of the players tasting action. It was reported that musa took a knock. Hope he is ok.
