AFCON 2023: E/Guinea First Choice Keeper Benched Again In Alaves’ Draw At Sociedad

Equatorial Guinea first choice goalkeeper Jesus Owono’s hopes of a first LaLiga appearance for Deportivo Alaves this season drags on.

Owono was once again benched in Alaves’ 1-1 draw at 10-man Real Sociedad on Tuesday night.

His only appearances have come in the Copa Del Rey and his last action was in a 1-0 win against lower division side Terrassa on 6th December 2023.

Tuesday’s draw at Sociedad saw Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq come on in the 86th minute, and was involved in his side’s 96th minute equalizer scored by Martin Zubimendi.

Sociedad had their first choice keeper Alex Remiro sent off on 36 minutes.

Alaves had to wait till the 76th before taking the lead through Luis Rioja who converted from the penalty spot.

Owono and his Alaves teammates are now winless in their last four games suffering three games and one draw.

Alaves are in 15th position on 17 points and are four points away from the relegation zone in the league table.

Owono is expected to man the post for Equatorial Guinea at this year’s AFCON where they are in Group A with Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria and Guinea-Bissau.

Equatorial Guinea will start the competition on January 14 against the Super Eagles.
