AFCON 2023: Mane Provides Assist As Champions Senegal Comfortably See Off Gambia

Champions Teranga Lions of Senegal made light work of Gambia in their opening Group C fixture with a comfortable 3-0 win.

A brace from Lamine Camara and a solitary strike from Pape Gueye secured the win for Senegal.

Gambia had a player sent off deep into first half stoppage time.

Star player Sadio Mane provided the assist for Senegal’s opener.

The former Liverpool star set up Gueye to put Senegal 1-0 up in the 4th minute.

Gambia were reduced to 10 men after Ebou Adams was shown a straight red card in the eight minute of first half added time.

In the 52nd minute Camara doubled Senegal’s lead before getting on the score sheet again with four minutes left to add the third goal.

The other game in the group will see the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon battle Guinea later on Monday.

This is a team wey Sabi. Business is business whether you’re playing Gambia or Brazil.

    • Absolutely, Papafem. The Super Eagles will stretch this Senegal side to breaking point. It will be anyone’s game if we meet Senegal. Nigeria are a solid side. We overwhelmed Equatorial Guinea.

  • I take back my word on Senegal being a squad of old men that may not defend the title. This team is still passionate for getting the second balls, not afraid to take on their opponents unlike touch me not football of my country whose FA president thoroughly dressed down the players and said they are not irreplaceable (who no like to boast say na during e tenure trophies plenty?)

For all I know, Senegal are 6 more matches away from retaining the title and would have thoroughly earned it playing in the same weather conditions some 600 billion naira worth group of players huffed and puffed to salvage an unwelcome draw knowing they are going to play against host nation and last year’s only competitive conquerors

This is a solid all-round football team. Well-oiled team with no ego issues. Sadio Mane is one of Africa’s greatest footballers yet very humble. I’m impressed with Senegal.

If they can properly integrate that victorious African U-20 side, they can dominate for quite some time.

    Lamine Camara is a proper-baller; skills, vision,dribbling,passing, shooting-technique – huge talent.

Senegal is the best team so far. Cameroon is currently 0-1 down to Guinea lol

Senegal used the 3-4-3 formation today. Obviously, they interpreted it well.
Their 2 midfielders had plenty of support from wingers Mane and Sarr, and from their wing backs.
They looked quite formidable today. They outplayed Gambia.
If our paths ever crossed, it would be a different story, as we would likely dominate proceedings. The problem is they will definitely take the chances that come their way.
    Will we?

That last question was the reason we couldn’t beat E.G. You win games by taking your chances!

    • Yes we will. Nigeria is the best team in the tournament.
