AFCON 2023: Super Eagles Bag Marginal Win Against Guinea-Bissau, Round Of 16 Spot; CIV Lose 0-4

The Super Eagles have qualified for the round of 16 at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations after edging Guinea-Bissau 1-0 in their final Group A game.

An own goal by Opa Sangante in the first half was enough to seal qualification for Jose Peseiro’s men.

The result means the Super Eagles qualify second on seven points behind Equatorial Guinea who top on superior goals scored.

Equatorial Guinea produced one of the shocks in AFCON history as they thrashed Côte d’Ivoire 4-0 in the other game.

The Ivorians will now have to wait to see if they will qualify as one of the third best placed teams.

Guinea-Bissau’s Nito Gomes had the first shot on target in the 7th minute but his effort was well saved by Stanley Nwabali.

In the 13th minute Famana Quizera hit a strike unfortunately it went off target.

Guinea-Bissau continued to bomb forward and went close on 21 minutes but nothing came out of it.

The Eagles then took the lead on 36 minutes as Simon’s low cross intended for Osimhen saw Sangante divert it into his own net.

In first half added time Osimhen met a cross with a header but it went just off target.

Guinea-Bissau had a chance in the 51st minute only for Quizera to see his attempt go wide.

On 64 minutes Alex Iwobi, who came on in the second half, saw his low stroke go just wide after good play from Moses Simon.

Osimhen had the ball in the net from a Bright Osayi-Samuel low cross but he was penalized for handling the ball.

Substitute Zaidu Sanusi also had the ball in the net some minutes later but Osimhen was adjudged to have handled the in the build up to the goal.

Why do they use women referee to officiate Nigeria match? Why? This was the same woman who rigged the watch between super falcon v Morocco in the last wafcon. Conspiracy theory. Africans are the problem of Africa.

So pls how was it the same woman who rigged the watch between super falcon v Morocco in the last wafcon…..I really do not understand.

Pls stop spreading fake news and baseless conspiracy theories and look for something else to blame for the tepid performance of these Eagles.

  • Equatorial Guinea are proving the boogy team in this tourney so far. Their emphatic victory over CIV has put a damper on the euphoria of the slim victory of the SE over same CIV. And the depressing fact the SE couldn’t even manage a shot on target and merely relied on the munificence of an own goal to get past Guinea Bissau tells a story of a languid and lethargic SE so far.
The Super Eagles have still got a lot of mileage to cover in improvements to go far in this tournament.

I have a strong feeling that our strikers will make us proud in the knocknout stage. They will sit up and will score lots of goals.

    Watch out!

  • Whether our strikers did not score in the group stage is none of our business as it relates to this Afcon. There are a lot of surprises in this tournament. So no one should condemn the team. Round of 16 is underway. The Super Eagles will win. Their opponent is Guinea or Cameroun. It is a knockout stage. This is what I have seen. I mean it we will.

Osimhen has to be focused and rewatch shooting videos. He should be humble to do this because there’s no shame in going back to recipe. Good win we are up against Guinea or Cameroon which shouldn’t be a problem if the coach has learnt his lessons and fix the scoring issues.
