AFCON 2023: ‘We Want To Play The Final’ — South Africa Coach Plans Nigeria Upset

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has expressed his team’s desire to play in the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Bafana Bafana will confront the Super Eagles in the semi-final at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake on Wednesday night.

The Super Eagles will head into the game as favourites, but Broos is banking on his side to upset Jose Peseiro’s men.

“Reaching the semifinal is very special for South African football,” said Belgian coach Broos, who led Cameroon to win the 2017 AFCON.

“Maybe we can make a surprise (vs Nigeria) now.

“The hunger is big to play the final next Sunday.”

The Super Eagles defeated South Africa 2-0 in the semi-final of the 2000 edition of the AFCON

Nigeria won 2-1 the last time both countries met in the quarter-finals at the 2019 edition hosted by Egypt.

Whatever the super eagles needs to do against south Africans must be done within 90 minutes or extra time otherwise if it reaches penalty shootouts, am sorry to say the se don’t stand a chance cos William is so good…

  • Francis Elugba 7 months ago

Good we’re locking horns with RSA. However, the boys must go with full energy in order to win the game and retain their renewed hope which is helping to unify our beloved country.

  • Williams is not penalty special, cape Verde just plays to his hands, if they rely on penalty to win Nigeria they will fail.

  • That’s true. A victory against our arch enemy, South Africa will further cement the relationship between Oloye, Adamu, Obioma.

    • Dreey 7 months ago

Just look at you. So much it’s now Oloye, Adamu, Obioma, what about Okojie, Byoma, Poju all from Midwestern region and the southern minorities in the country? Eagles are winning for all of us and they remain our pride. President Tinubu is free to do anything in support.

Super Eagles are doing that quite well judging from their exploits so far. But quite apparently, the government is like Nigeria remains united under one political party system.

  • Dj Bash 7 months ago

I pray South Africa win this.

  • Nigeria has never lost in Bouake
Nigeria have played three competitive games at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake, and they have never lost any. They played all three of their group games in the 1984 AFCON at Bouake. They played Algeria, Ghana, and Malawi in the competition, and they picked up one win and two draws. Super Eagles will win again. Mark this day.

Talk about “kidology” – This coach is playing mind games and trying to put some pressure on the Super Eagles but it will fail for two main reasons –

    1) Nigeria are not the favourites going into this match – South Africa are – If you look at the results of the two teams so far up to this point in the tournament, you’ll observe that Bafana Bafana have had the more eye catching results and if you further look at the recent history of the two teams, South Africa have the more prominent profile (lately) – I mean they made the last World cup while Nigeria did not? Say no more after that because that in itself sums it up.

    2) They have had a more settled run up to the tournament with their general preparations, be it very good level tune up friendly matches and coming from a more solid base in their country where their FA works correctly as an FA should work and supports their team as good as the best FA’s in the world do, they do not lack the amenities and football infrastructure or financial support and availability that the Super Eagles glaringly lack due to abject mismanagement and disgraceful levels of corruption (but that is no new story)- every one knows about the abject state of things including football investment, organisation and infrastructure in Nigeria, so considering all the above it is comical for oga Bros or anyone for that matter to be trying to claim that Nigeria go into the game as favourites – that is kidology 101 and nobody is falling for your mind games oga Broos

We nor dey talk too much again, nah pan de field of play we dey come express we self – so oga Bros we go dey see you and Bafana Bafana on Wednesday by God’s Grace. Shikena!

    • …… which World Cup be that. South  Africa has not been to World Cup since the one they hosted in 2010.

      • Field Marshall. General. Sir Johnbob 7 months ago

Ehn okay – my bad but it still don’t change the point I’m making – I’m not having anyone saying Nigeria are the favourites going into the match because we ain’t, South Africa are. Simples

Did you smoke some weed before writing above comments?

Which South Africa Bafana Bafane team made the last World Cup? Their last WC attendance was in 2010 which they hosted

What quality level friendlies are you talking about? They only played Lesotho 0:0 in Jan 10th 2024.

Their FA is also full of mismanagement too, Danny Jordan has been at the helms of affairs since 1997 till date, he only stepped down for 1 term  just so he could focus on his role in organising 2010 WC in SA. He is under immense pressure to step down currently

Abeg try do some research before writing your comments next time, stop peddling misinformation

  • I support field marshal on this…. Nigeria before this tournament was completely written of both home and abroad…..some of our player’s foreign clubs even expected our players back for late January fixtures……No good preparation,no good training camp, backlog of salary and wages, poor performance in friendly games…..I can still remember some disturbing and humiliating comments made here by some of us about the team…….Now suddenly SE is the favourite?…..
We have short memory in Nigeria and it’s affecting us as a country!

If you know the history of Nigerian football, it’s alwsys been like this. In fact, any competition we participate in with wahala, we always do well in them.

There were challenges in our Papendal camp in 1994 and in the few friendly matches we played (not sure we even won one friendly matches), but we came out fine at the WC. We lost to Togo in our last friendly match in Lagos while preparing for Atlanta 96. There were financial issues as well going to that competition and Olishe had to rescue the team many times but we won Olympic gold in America. France 98 wasn’t better with a spate of injuries and political influence in the team. Philipe Troussier who qualified the team for that competition was sacked. We lost all our friendly matches including our humiliation in the hands of Holland. Within the team, there was infighting and serious infraction but we topped our group and even destroyed Almighty Spain with all their Raul, Enrique and Fernando Hierro. We all know what happened in 2013 afcon when we lost total trust in that team but they shocked CIV in the quarter Final. We went on to win the cup. There were financial troubles too in Rio 2014, so bad that Mikel and a Japanese doctor had to come to the aid of the team. Remember we won bronze in the summer Olympics as well. Its like our doing well in international competitions is tied to internal troubles! This is because the same scenario is playing out now but the team is thriving.

I see history repeating itself and it’s not funny that we have to look for trouble before doing well in any competition. Remember the Super Falcons too in the years 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and even this last WC. There was even a year they refused to leave their hotel room after winning the WAFCON because the NFF refused to pay their bonuses! Okocha once joked that it’s like we always pray for troubles before attending any competition so the SEs could do well. Lol

Despite all our challenges, u see us winning the cup!

We were not favorites from the beginning due to our uninspiring start to our WorldCup qualifiers and friendly matches. As it stands now we are the highest ranked team left in the tournament. That is why we are considered favorites to win it from here on. Against SA definitely we are the overwhelming favorite.

If you look around all over social media and sports analytics everywhere we are the undisputed favorite going into this match. SA have only beaten us once in a competitive match. (AFCON qualifiers in 2017) All our meetings at the AFCON we’ve always beaten them. Therefore, going into this match it is visible to the blind and audible to the deaf that we are the Undisputed favorite to win this encounter.

Agreed SA have improved over the years particularly since Broos became their coach. However, we have the mental edge over them anytime in terms of football. Player for player we are way better than all these PSL boys. As a team they look compact but I don’t think they’re as disciplined as the SuperEagles.

They will come out to play but in my opinion this SA team is not better than Angola. The only team that can stop the SuperEagles from bringing home the trophy is the SuperEagles.

    VAMOS ARRIBBA SUPEREAGLES!!!!

I believe and I am very sure that South Africa were lucky to beat the Cape Verde in their last match.

Going by that, they should wish themselves goodbye.

Even the South African coach knows what is awaiting them on Wednesday. He said, and i quote “Maybe we can make a surprise (vs Nigeria) now.

Wait a minute, I hope Oga Rohr followers are enjoying Nwabali so far? Even Oga Rohr himself has confirmed Nwabali the best option for Super Eagles, and I’m expecting his fan to accept that too before it is too late.

I haven’t seen many of them here commenting about the Super Eagles. I think they are still waiting for Eagles’ downfall, abi? Mba, that won’t happen kę.

Just two more matches to go, then we are champions of African.

I don’t believe in the coach, but that doesn’t mean I should wish my country bad kę.

The gaffer has done really well. As time goes on, he will fix the little problems in the Super Eagles.

For sure, Bafana bafana will be intense pressure against Nigeria just to dud against Cape Verde, and I hope Eagles will take advantage of that. Good luck to our Super Eagles. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
