Afolabi Tries Out For Lions

Southampton Under-23 star Jonathan Afolabi could be on the move in the summer after featuring for Millwall’s youngsters.

The 19-year-old has played close to 70 matches for Saints’ youth teams and had hoped to make the jump to the first team.

However, the fact he has featured for the Lions’ development squad suggests the Republic of Ireland Under-19 star has no future at St Mary’s.

Millwall boss Neil Harris said: “We’re at that stage now, once you get to April, that players start finding out if their futures lie at clubs or they don’t lie at a club. “It is about being proactive.

If players have been told their futures don’t lie at the club they are at – they might have been ones we have noticed before or recommended to our scouts – then we might want to take a look. “Sometimes it is a lot easier doing now than pre-season – you get an opportunity to look now and get a headstart on other teams.” Harris’s comment suggest Afolabi has been told that he will be released at the end of the campaign, so will leave the south coast in a couple of months to try his luck elsewhere.
