African Games 2023: Falconets Defeat Uganda To Reach Final

Nigeria’s Falconets have reached the final of the women’s football event of the African Games 2023.

The Falconets achieved this after recording a 2-0 win against Uganda in the semi-finals on Monday.

Second half goals from Okah Adaobi and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu secured the win.

Adaobi opened the scoring in the 74th minute before Okwuchukwu added the second on 89 minutes.

It is now three wins in three games for the Christopher Danjuma-led side.

The team opened their Group B campaign with a 2-0 win against Morocco before hammering Senegal 4-0 in their second game.

The Falconets are the defending champions of the African Games women’s football event.

  • Welldone girls, but how many sports in total that only Egypt have won 91 gold and total of 153 or so medal? Why the second place nija with our African giant tag and huge population got 27gold?

Even me tire and wondering what the spiry ministry is doing with our huge population. Can’t the ministry tinker on how to engage schools, communities in quarterly/annually organized sports competition?

Egypt is a force from the time of Joseph till date as one of the oldest successful nation with consistent tradition, and you expect Nigeria that is less than 500years old to come close right? Nigeria has a long way of discipline and development to arrive at the Egyptian level. Think about it how come their players don’t have to travel to succeed in their endeavours unlike Nigeria that is a corrupt state full of unsupportive government and system designed to haunt you as an entrepreneur not saying a few don’t make it. But a lot must change before we can truly be the main giant of Africa.

  • Falconets Lead The Pack: Nigeria 2: Uganda 0

The Falconets have been undeniably fabulous, irrepressible and unstoppable in this Africa Games Women’s football tournament.

In just three games, they have bagged 6 goals and conceded none to be the only undefeated team in the tournament and the only ones to have clean sheets in all their duels.

Against obdurate Uganda in the semi-finals, substitutes Okah Adaobi in 74 minute and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu in 89 minutes turned out to be game changers with babelicious goals. The Ugandans put up respectable resistance but the Falconets were too hot for them to handle.

However I think they will be facing Ghana in the final as I expect the hosts to dispatch with Senegal in their semi final encounter.

This will afford Coach Chris Danjuma the opportunity to avenge last year’s WAFU U-20 final loss to the same Ghana in the same country.

If we strike Gold, Nigeria will extend her dominance in these games with 4 Winners medals with Ghana and Cameroon further behind in our rear view mirror with measly 1 group Gold medals against their respective names.

Well done to Danjuma and his girls for qualifying for the final and good luck to them in that game.

Please, don’t lose to Ghana in consecutive finals o!

Well put Mr Deo I hope the NFF now knows who the real coaches are and do away with likes of Ladan Issa Bosso. The match against Ghana will be a close call because both teams are very talented and good at taking chances. I see both teams are excellent and will celebrate both teams in the final with no hard feelings as a lover of quality football management.

  • Chima,

Flamingoes fans will be crazy to miss that match between Ghana and Nigeria. It will be a bloodbath.

The young Ghanaian ladies will want to extend their recent dominance against Nigeria in this do-or-die duel against between rivals, both determined to give no quarters.

Ghana play like a house on fire, flooding into opposition box 18 with menacing numbers. They have speed, physicality and tactical prowess. They will also have their vociferous large fans to count on. These fans have filled the stadium for Ghana’s games which is very commendable on their part.

Nigeria, who are undefeated with clean sheets in all their games, do not look as menacing as Ghana. Danjuma ladies obviously score goals and keep it tight at the back. But, will they be able to march the relentlessness of Ghana? Will they be able to curtail Ghana’s goal thirsty forwards? Will Ghana curb their own forward drives due to Nigeria’s deadliness in front of goal?

It will be a tactical encounter. Ghana proved last year (in the Wafu U-20 final)that they can curb Nigeria effectively. They made superstars Opeyemi Ajakaye, Flourish Sebastian and Esther Onyenezide look toothless and ordinary before blowing Nigeria away in penalties.

Will Ghana triumph again or has Coach Chris Danjuma learnt a thing or two?

We don’t have long to wait.
