Ali Talks Up Somerset’s Potential

Somerset batsman Azhar Ali is confident his team have enough quality to compete across all formats this season.

The former Pakistan captain enjoyed a fine campaign in 2018 as he scored 402 runs in the County Championship at an average of 33.50.

However, he could not fire his county past Surrey, with Somerset finishing as runners-up for the second time in three years.

Ali has since retired from international ODI cricket and he is available for both the Specsavers County Championship and the Royal London One-Day Cup.

With the new season just weeks away, Ali is confident his team can compete at the top and win some silverware in 2019.

He told Sky Sports: “The main target has to be to win the County Championship, and that is something that I hope I can help Somerset achieve this time around.

“I’ve arrived early for the start of the season ahead to acclimatise, and I can’t wait for the season to start. “I think the Somerset squads are very strong in all three formats, and I believe we can challenge for honours in all three formats. “We had a good season last time around and we were there or thereabouts, but I feel if we make some slight improvements, we could be challenging for the top position this year.”
