Azarenka Delighted After Reaching Monterrey Final

Victoria Azarenka says she was happy with her performance after booking her place in Sunday’s Monterrey Open final. Former world number one Azarenka was the underdog heading into her semi-final against top seed Angelique Kerber but the Belarusian produced a brilliant display to pick up a 6-4 4-6 6-1 victory.

The 29-year-old will contest her first final since April 2016 on Sunday when she takes on Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, who earlier dispatched Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova 6-2 6-3. Speaking after her win, Azarenka says she was pleased with her decision making under pressure and is hoping to keep improving.

“I haven’t won many of those in the last couple years so it’s good that I’m able to turn it around and pick up my level,” she was quoted as saying by BBC Sport. “I’m getting back used to playing, and I’m trying to make better decisions, better choices under pressure. “It’s all about taking one step at a time. To put it all together is always more tricky, so I’m glad that I’m able to put little pieces together in the important moments.” Sunday’s final will be just the second meeting between the pair, with Azarenka winning in straight sets back in Miami in 2016.
