Baby Steps For Lam’s Wigan

Baby Steps For Lam’s Wigan

Adrian Lam says there’s plenty of room for improvement from his Wigan team but was happy to see them edge out Leeds 34-16 on Friday.

The reigning Betfred Super League champions bounced back from their loss to St Helens on the opening weekend of the new season by running in six tries in a comfortable triumph over the Rhinos.

Despite the comprehensive nature of the scoreline, it was the visitors to the DW Stadium who started the better, Ash Handley and Brett Ferres going over for Leeds early on.

The Warriors responded with tries from Dan Sarginson and Ben Flower before further scores from Joe Greenwood and Joe Bullock sent them in 22-12 ahead at the interval.

George Williams further increased the home side’s advantage before skipper Kallum Watkins kept Leeds’ faint hopes alive when diving over in the corner.

Liam Farrell’s try made sure of the two points for Wigan, who have now won their last seven games at home to Leeds, while the Rhinos remain without a point after losing to Warrington last week.

Lam says there were plenty of positives to take from Friday’s win but insists he is expecting big improvements as the season goes on.

Lam told BBC Radio Manchester: “At least we had some shape tonight and played a little bit of rugby – I felt last week we didn’t do that.

“We probably missed 10 opportunities to score but you’ve got to walk before you can run, so it was important we got that result. “It wasn’t an ideal start but we rallied and got our way back into the game.”
