Benitez Coy Over Newcastle Future

Rafael Benitez says he is set for another meeting with Mike Ashley about extending his stay as Newcastle United manager.

Benitez managed to guide the Magpies to Premier League safety for the second season running and the north-east outfit signed off the 2018/19 campaign with an emphatic 4-0 victory at relegated Fulham on Sunday.

The Spanish tactician’s contract expires on July 1 and discussions have been taking place for the past couple months in a bid to get the former Liverpool boss to put pen-to-paper on a new deal.

Assurances over money to spend in the transfer window appear to be the stumbling block at the moment, but, when asked about his future, Benitez said he was hopeful an agreement could be reached soon. “What I can guarantee is that was my last game this season! We will see what happens in the future.

Obviously, you know we have a meeting coming soon, and hopefully, we will have more news for everyone,” he told reporters. “Because we have been talking about this for a while my answer is always the same.

We have a meeting coming soon, hopefully, and then we will see where we are. “Someone will ask me the question, do I want to stay? It’s very easy.

I can see the potential of this massive club and hopefully we can do things in a way that will be good for everyone to move forward, maybe together.”
