Blades Waiting On McGoldrick Fitness News

Sheffield United will be hoping David McGoldrick is fit for the Premier League clash against Arsenal as he continues to struggle with a groin injury. The 31-year-old forward was expected to feature for the Republic of Ireland during this international fortnight.

However, after missing the goalless Euro 2020 Group D qualifying draw in Georgia on Saturday, boss Mick McCarthy hoped he would be involved in Tuesday’s game against Switzerland in Geneva.

But McCarthy confirmed during a press conference that McGoldrick had been in touch to confirm that he is not fit enough to be involved. “I had a text from him after the game just telling us well done and wishing us luck for the next one and also letting me know that he wouldn’t be fit,” said the 60-year-old. “I kind of knew that anyway.”

The news will be a blow to the Irish camp, given that they know a win against the Swiss would secure them a place in the Euro 2020 finals.

McGoldrick is yet to score in five Premier League appearances for the Blades, he did grab the vital late equaliser in last month’s draw between Republic of Ireland and the Swiss in Dublin.

McGoldrick’s Blades team-mate Callum Robinson is set to be involved for the Irish and United boss Chris Wilder will be keeping his fingers crossed that he returns unscathed.

In the meantime, the cub’s medical staff will be assessing McGoldrick’s groin in a bid to get him fit and ready for the visit of Arsenal to Bramall Lane on Monday night.

The Blades go into the game on the back of a goalless draw at Watford before the international break and sit in 13th position on nine points – two clear of the relegation places.
Unai Emery’s Gunners are currently third in the table, just one point behind reigning champions Manchester City.
