Argentina World Cup winning captain, Lionel Messi, has been named The Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year.
Messi was announced as the winner at the award held in Paris, France on Monday.
The 35-year-old was named as the Player of the Tournament in Qatar after scoring seven goals and has now received yet another accolade following a sensational end to the year for club and country.
Having also scored six times and provided nine assists in just 14 Ligue 1 matches before the World Cup, Messi climbed ahead of his rivals after not even being nominated for the Ballon d’Or back in August.
Meanwhile, club teammate Kylian Mbappe finished second with Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema in third.
Lionel Scaloni was named as the FIFA Best Men’s Coach of the Year after guiding Argentina to the World Cup, while Emiliano Martinez was chosen as the best goalkeeper.
Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas claimed her second consecutive FIFA Women’s Player award, Best Women’s Goalkeeper award was won by Mary Earps of England and Manchester United, Sarina Wiegman got the award for Best Women’s Coach of the Year, Polish amputee player Marcin Oleksy net home with the The FIFA Puskas award, Argentina fans were awarded the FIFA Fan award, Georgian footballer Luka Lochoshvili was awarded the FIFA Fair Play Award for acting decisively during an Australian Bundesliga match.
