John Obi Mikel scored his maiden goal for Middlesbrough who defeated Rotherham United 2-1 away from home in their Championship clash at the AESSEAL New York Stadium on Sunday.
The win was however not good enough for Tony Pulis ‘ men who missed out on a Championship play-off place.
Britt Assombalonga opened scoring for Boro from then spot two minutes before the half hour mark.
Middlesbrough finished in seventh position with 73 points, one point adrift of Frank Lamparad’s Derby County who defeated West Bromwich Albion 3-1 at home to claim the last play-off spot.
Mikel doubled the advantage for the visitors in the 37th minute of the encounter.
Micheal Smith halved the deficit for the home team from the spot four minutes from time.
The game was Mikel ‘ s 18th of the season for Middlesbrough.
His international teammate Semi Ajayi featured from start to finish for Rotherham United in the game.
Ajayi who scored eight goals for the Millers this season featured in all of their 46 league games.
Rotherham United will play in the League one next season following their relegation from the Championship.
At the Bet365 Stadium, Oghenekaro Etebo played for entire 90 minutes as Stoke City held Sheffield United to a 2-2 draw.
Etebo racked 34 appearances for the Potters this season and scored two goals.
