City Youngster Set For First Team Role

City Youngster Set For First Team Role

Pep Guardiola is expecting Manchester City defender Eric Garcia to make a Premier League breakthrough next season. The 18-year-old Spain youth international made his senior bow last term, impressing the Man City boss after three starts came in the Carabao Cup, with the Citizens going on to lift the eventual trophy.

And City insiders have hinted classy Garcia, who was plucked away from Barcelona’s academy two years ago, is earmarked to regularly enter the weekly mix during the next campaign. He is understood to have quietly excited Guardiola’s backroom with his assuredness around the first-team squad on a daily basis in training.

The Manchester giants do plan to recruit another central defender in the coming weeks and Leicester City and England man Harry Maguire remains a primary target, although his £80m valuation remains a sizeable hurdle. City want to fill the rearguard void left by the departure of skipper Vincent Kompany, but Garcia is now seen as a trusted rotational option alongside John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, Nicolas Otamendi and Fernandinho.
