Current Super Eagles Players Better Than 2013 AFCON Winning Squad —Omeruo

Current Super Eagles Players Better Than 2013 AFCON Winning Squad —Omeruo

Kenneth Omeruo has said the current Super Eagles players are better in terms of quality compared to the 2013 AFCON winning squad.

Omeruo stated this while previewing Monday’s 2023 AFCON second leg tie between the Super Eagles and Guinea-Bissau.

In the first leg clash in Abuja Guinea-Bissau shocked the Eagles 1-0 thanks to a Mama Balde strike.

Omeruo was a member of the 2013 AFCON winning squad that had the likes of Vincent Enyeama, John Obi Mikel, Emmanuel Emenike, Victor Moses, Ogenyi Onazi, Brown Ideye, Ambrose Efe, Ahmed Musa and Sunday Mba.

But speaking in Sunday’s press conference, Omeruo posited that the current Eagles team have better quality players and are good enough to avenge the first leg loss to Guinea-Bissau.

“Guinea-Bissau was lucky to come out with the win against us because possession wise we dominated the game and we missed a lot of chances. I think the boys know what the mission is, we are not here for a draw we are coming to fight for everything.

“And believe me we have better players with better quality now than we did when we won the AFCON in 2013 and this is why I believe it’s something we can definitely do. And my role is to do my best on the pitch and try to advise especially the new players coming in.”

The Leganes defender noted that every mistake made in the reverse fixture in Abuja will be corrected.

He added:“The coaches do a great job in training they make sure the videos are available for us to watch the opponent and tactics so we know when we are going into the pitch we are ready.

“Like I said we were unlucky (in the first leg) and we will correct everything that wasn’t done right.“

  • Definitely! The only difference between them is that: 2013 team are more aggressive but of low qualities.

What is this one saying.. how on Earth will u be comparing this current super eagle to that of 2013.. u are dreaming old man.. the only player the only player u can compare with dat team is osimeh.. see ur teeth…who can u be comparing with Moses, emenike, brown ideye.. Vincent emyema, Efe Ambrose, ikechuku uche, Sunday Mba…omeruo If u don’t what to say.. u better go nd sleep.. make una dey disgrace una self for Minor teams.. shameless nd bench warmers wey una be

My brother I join u laugh in Spanish. Kwakwakwa . Its mind blogging to hear this from a seasoned player like Omeru.. Who in this present squad can u compare to Mikel/Onazi DM pairiing of that time, Vincent Eyeama Africa’s best keeper of all time according to pundits, and Victor Moses , Even our defence pairing of Omeru and Obua buna is better than what we have now. In terms of team set up 2013 was very unpredictable quite unlike the present squad that is one dimensional. You cannot win the AFCON by fluke 2013 squad won because they were the best and remain the best after 1994 set

  • Am afraid I have to agree with omeruo on this one…… Individually the current team is better than the 2013 team……. The 2013 team only had Mikel Moses Uche onazi and Maybe yobo or so playing in a top5 European league but Almost all the present team play in top5 European teams……But football is not an individual game……It’s a collective effort…..it’s a competitive game…..the 2013 team had competition embedded in it……Even Mikel was not sure of his position…..We saw uche sitting on the bench for Emenike to play…..we saw Ogunde sitting on the bench for young onazi to play…….we saw yobo sitting on the bench for young obuabona to play……we saw Musa sitting on the bench for a “national team inexperienced” Victor Moses to play………we saw Igiebor sitting on the bench for home base Mbah to play…….that’s called competition in a team……keshi took difficult decisions and it paid off……. Individuals don’t win tournaments it’s a team that wins tournaments……..A team must be competitive to win tournaments…….A team must be unpredictable to win tournaments……A team must be bold to win tournaments……the present team lacks all these ingredients……If the NFF allows a good coach mould this present players into a competitive unit then the world would marvel at the talents Nigeria currently has.

Really omeruo?is it in mere words or in deeds and performances.so it is now clear that you guys are the problem as the nff president said

  • Moses Inyang 11 months ago

So you guys don’t know the value of the Nigerian jerseys you are wearing and you lack patriotic zeal. Now I know it’s not really the coach that is the problem but you guys.continue to rub mud on your faces and disgrace yourselves.I now understand why you shamelessly lost to CAR and Ghana

I reserve my comments until i see the line up for todays match and the formation. If he uses 4 2 4 formation and bassey in central defense then i know the problem is irredeemable. Sack him now and disband this team

  • Current team is better than 2013 you these idiots.

  • omerua are you trying to hype this team so that you will get playing time? this team is no way better than the 2013 team. that team had better defenders a more coordinated midfield and good attacking players that were decisive infront of goal. plus a great goal keeper as well, so no this current super eagles are no way better than that team.

Osimeh can’t play with this 4:4:2 formation
