Deeney Plays Down Semi-Final Hype

Troy Deeney has admitted that he is not excited at the prospect of playing against Wolves in the FA Cup semi-final with Watford. The 30-year-old Hornets’ skipper will be heading into his second last-four game in the FA Cup at Wembley, while he has also played at the national stadium in the play-off final defeat against Crystal Palace in 2014.

And, while he is looking forward to trying to create some history with Watford by reaching the final when they face Wolves on Sunday, Deeney is not going overboard because he feels this should be the norm for the club going forwards.

He told the Observer: “I wouldn’t say it’s the biggest game of my career, it’s probably the biggest opportunity in terms of making a legacy at this club. “We’re still fighting for seventh in the league and obviously the opportunity to go into the FA Cup final so I wouldn’t say it’s the biggest game, I’d just say it’s a massive opportunity to take this club another step forward which I’ve always tried to do in the nine years I’ve been here.

“I’ve got a weird feeling about this one, it doesn’t excite me too much, it’s just another game. “I want people to understand the perspective because people always say that it’s a big occasion for a team outside the top six. “Where we’re aspiring to get to and where Wolves are trying to aspire to get to is to be in this sort of situation more regularly, so we don’t see it as a one off, we see it as the building blocks to do more.

“If we can get over this final hurdle and get to the final, we say ‘alright now there’s another block can we go on and win it?'”
