Cyriel Dessers has celebrated his first ever goal for the Super Eagles after opening his account in the 2-1 loss to Mexico in Saturday’s friendly game.
Dessers marked his return to the Eagles by getting on the score sheet early in the second half.
The Europa Conference League top scorer bagged the equalizer with a superb downward header off a cross from Calvin Bassey.

Santiago Gimenez had given Mexico the lead in the 12th minute while an own goal by William Troost-Ekong saw the Eagles go behind again.
And commenting on his first goal for the Eagles, Dessers wrote on Twitter:“Mexico v Nigeria, couldn’t be more proud to score my 1st international goal 🇳🇬.”
The Belgian-born striker has the opportunity to add to his tally when the Eagles face Ecuador in another friendly on June 2.
He emerged the first ever top scorer in the inaugural Europa Conference League with 10 goals.
Unfortunately he failed to help Feyenoord land a first European title since 2002 following their 1-0 defeat to Roma in the final.
Born in Belgium to a Belgian father and Nigerian mother, Dessers chose to represent Nigeria at international level in December 2019.
On 4 March 2020, he was called up by former Super Eagles head coach head coach Gernot Rohr as part of the players invited for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Sierra Leone.
Dessers debuted for Nigeria in a friendly 1–1 draw with Tunisia on 13 October 2020.
In July 2017, Dessers moved to FC Utrecht, agreeing a contract for three years with an option for an additional year. On 11 August 2017, he scored the first goal in the competition.
After the 2019–20 Eredivisie season was abandoned, Dessers was jointly awarded the Top Goalscorer award alongside Steven Berghuis with fifteen goals each.
On 30 June 2020, Dessers moved to Genk on a four-year deal.

The first of many.
This guy playing in front of Osimene who with his huge volume of energy prefers to attack from all over the pitch, will deliver loads of goals to the SE much like the days of Amokachi/Yekini combo.
Above all you get a feeling Cyriel Dessers loves Nigeria and remains unwavering in his commitment to the Super Eagles.
Who needs Ighalo and Musa when there is Dessers. Experience my foot. I and I believe that Musa, Ighalo, Balogun, Ekong, Akpeyi, Shehu should honourably resign from the super Eagles. If they don’t, I and I will still support the team. Lolzzzz ZA ZA ZA.
Heaven bless all old super Eagles players who decide to retire.
You must have a sense of humour…lol
Please they should invite Opkoguma. They need competition in central defence.
Akpoguma and Basset could for the new central defense.
I can’t wait to see Desser/Osimehn and Lookman/Chukwueze attacking quad.
Ndidi/Iwobi/Aribo mid field.
Sanusi/Basset/Akpoguma/Aina defense.
Okoye or Uzoho or Sabastine.
With a confident coach and mentality, we will enjoy our football again.
Bassey I meant.
Yes o! My people we are beginning to see clearly.
*Semi Ajayi is now ripe and ready. His performances during the nation’s cup has said it all.
* Kelvin Akpoguma once played from the center against Tunisia in a friendly and till date, that was his best for the Eagles. He can still do it again.
*Chigozie Awaziem is now ripe also, his game against cameroon in double headed friendly showed he’s ready.
*Calvin Bassey is already showing what he’s made up.. arguably the best we have in both left center and left side back.
Then apart from homebase players..
Jonas David should be introduced to take over from Balogun, Oneruo was picked directly from under 20 so, Jonas should be able to learn and blend.
*Watching Jordan Torunarigha playing for Genk the last time, he should be able to support us defensively, he can also play as a left back and left Central too. I heard he’s ready to make the switch. We still have others both home and abroad, it’s time we move on from the old legs, Balogun doesn’t play most games with rangers, Omeruo has no shirt in second division Leganes, Ekong hardly get chance with Watford but all the names up there are regulars for their club sides.
Eguavoen, the Technical Director!!!…Have you now seen Dessers play or you did not watch the game? Seriously…
The guy na idiot. No mind am.
