Dessers’ Late Goal Earns Feyenoord Victory At Okoye’s Sparta Rotterdam

Cyriel Dessers was the hero for Feyenoord as he netted a 92nd minute goal, to give his side a 1-0 win at Maduka Okoye’s Sparta Rotterdam in the Rotterdam derby in Sunday’s Dutch league, Completesports.com reports.

It was Dessers’ third goal in six league appearances for Feyenoord, which took his tally to four in 15 outings in all competitions this season.

For Okoye, it was his 11th appearance for Sparta so far in the on going campaign.

Feyenoord sits third with the victory and now four points behind Ajax while Sparta Rotterdam are 17th.

Feyenoord began with their strongest eleven after a week of rest, while Sparta Rotterdam boosted their confidence with a 2-0 win over GVVV.

Sparta went close first with a long-range effort from Bryan Smeets and at the other end, Okoye denied Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Luis Sinisterra.

Early in the second half, Bryan Linssen had the chance to put Feyenoord ahead but once again Okoye denied the visitors.

Feyenoord continued to push for the winner, while Sven Mijnans had a rare chance for Sparta but could only fire wide.

The game was heading for a 0-0 draw but in the 92nd minute, Dessers proved to be the matchwinner as his strike into the far corner was enough to beat Okoye.

Watched the match and I must say Okoye was fantastic….he was the only reason
Sparta Rotterdam could even drag the match to goaless at 90 mins….it was really sad they conceded a very late goal…that aside Okoye was brilliant…would’ve been the MOTM hands down if they hadn’t conceded the late goal…I was not a big fan of Okoye esp in SE but I’ve to admit that kid has huge potential…I was so impressed that I had to go to YouTube to see his highlight for last season….guy I think we need to be patient with the kid.Sparta Rotterdam tho are terrible in attack.

Okoye has been nothing but fantastic this season, clearly the best player in an overtly horrible Sparta team this season. Even when he ends up conceding 4, it would have been 8. I counted 4-5 point blank saves in today’s match just like in the game against Eindhoven.

This is the 3rd league game running in which inability to maintain defensive discipline and concentration in the dying minutes of a game will deny Sparta valuable points, after so much hard work by the boy in keeping his team in the game all game long. As much as I was glad to see Dessers get on the scoring sheet again (that guy is a huge attacking talent we must not wish away with the wave of a hand), I was equally sad to see the ball still crawl into the net despite Maduka going full length at point blank range to tip Dessers’ one-time curler against the post. I just hope they can get enough quality in the winter window to avoid relegation. This obviously isnt the Sparta team that was so “never-say-die” last season. The coach too might just need to start looking at using 3 at the back henceforth.

Those who are always quick to bring out their megaphones after checking livescore.com to announce to the world that Okoye has conceded 4 goals in a match but suddenly go mute when their ‘new enyeama’ does the same, can at least read reports of his commendable performances even in defeats. Its not just mere coincidence that teams are still circling around the youngster despite the precarious position of his team on the log.

      • I watched that match and I was really impressed. Okoye has really improved. Some of the goals he saved today, would have been a goal, last season. For real, the young man is doing well and has the potentials to do even more.

Dessers is a kind of striker that every coach has ever prayed for but here we are, NFF and Mr. Gernot Rohr begging Ighalo to come back to do what?

Between Ighalo and Dessers as a good coach and honest fans, choose one between both.

Dessers has a unique style of play and he is a complete striker that play any where upfront.

Since NFF and Oga Rohr are confused, then we fans have to come to their rescue. Invite Dessers instead of Ighalo period.

Give Dessers enough time to play and I promise our world class coach that Dessers will prove his worth to him.

Dessers is one of the best among our strikers. That is the bitter truth. It is very frustrating that the gaffer do not recognize fantastic players.

We have Dennis, our new Aghahowa but the coaches have chosen not to consider our best players to play for Nigeria.

I believe between now and January, we will get it right. Nigerians will decide. Congratulations to you Dessers. We love you. God bless Nigeria!!!

For so long, Sparta Rotterdam has formed the bad habit of losing concentration in dying minutes and conceding very silly goals……after working so hard against conceeding…….after their goalkeeper has saved a ton of unsaveables. This has happened before severally and once again reared its ugly head today. In my own opinion, the coach’s last substitutions led to the goal. Removing Emegha and Thy affected the balance of the team. Apart from the substitutions, I also fault his line up. Mijnans should have started from the bench, because he didn’t do well both in attack or in his attempts to help in defence. On the other side, even though Smeets didn’t perform his attacking duties very well, he did so well in helping the defence.
Overall, the defence did a lot better today than in the past. Kudos to the coach for that improvement. Pehaps, the attack could have come good, but Mijnans played really badly, killing a lot of attacking opportunities for his team. If he doesn’t improve, he should no longer be starting. The coach has to go back to the drawing board. He has the materials to deliver, but his problem is how to effectively use them.
Finally, the coach has to find a way especially through his selections and substitutions to keep his boys motivated and concentrated until the final blast of the whistle. Because, it is very demoralizing to be losing a lot of matches in such a manner as it happened today

    Dessers is a good striker.
His performance against Tunisia convinced me. The same match against Tunisia convinced me that Ejuke needs to be in the team, which is why I asked the question the other day – WHO DID EJUKE OFFEND?
Fortunately, today Ejuke is an important member of the team, and rightly so.
I’m hoping the same thing happens in the case of Cyriel Dessers. He also excelled in the Tunisia game, even though he had so little time.
THIS IS NOT A DESSERS VS IGHALO DECISION.
What we need is our best legs. Dessers and Ighalo should both be excluded, if others are better than them. Conversely, Dessers and Ighalo should both be selected if they are among our best legs. It’s not rocket science.
If we select our very best legs from our large pool of strikers, then we will get the best results. Our chances of achieving our objectives will increase.

@pompei How do we now know our best when players aren’t getting the opportunity to play for their father land.

The truth is that Rohr is not a good coach for our current super Eagles ( at least the current level of Super Eagles is above him)

Apart from osimhen which other striker can we boast of in Rohr’s team?
Onuachu is ineffective as the coach doesn’t have what it takes to bring out the best in him, iheanacho on the other hand though talented but can be unserious on many occasions which makes me think he would have succeeded more as comedian than footballer.

We have Dennis, Dessers, moffi, awoninyi and Sadiq quality strikers but they are not giving the space to explore and make the Super Eagles great again!

For long time on this forum I have advocated for Olise to be invited before he gains media attention but our mediocre coach doesn’t know that our team lacks depth in attacking midfield areas, now will he be less conservative and try other options we have like kelechi nwakali? I believe that the combination of chukwueze, osihme and nwakali will be a delight to watch just like in the U17 days.

@Goal, you are on point. Kai, you made my day.

You said it too well and God bless you.

Am very impressed and how I wish the coach can read your comment and change for better.

Keep it up bro. God bless Nigeria!!!

Coach Rohr and NFF should please invite Cyriel Dessers of Feyenoord and Odion Ighalo for the games against Liberia and Cape Verde especially now that Victor Osimhen is battling against injury. Cyriel Dessers is a great player with enormous potential as an attacking midfielder cum striker. It will be a shame if Nigeria misses the next world cup in Qatar. Maduka Okoye has the potential to be a great goalkeeper in future and Nigeria should be patient with the young lad. Also great to see that Samuel Chukwueze is getting back to fitness again. He will be needed for the games against Liberia and Cape Verde. I also pray for Victor Osimhen’s speedy recovery.

Duran has paid his dues in the national team. Let the younger players have their time. Spanish national is not yelling for segio Ramos or fabregas and they are playing well. Nigeria is not a country like Tanzania or South Africa that lacks talents. We have 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th,6th and 7th choice strikers we can select from to represent the national team

They used to cry for Eze. What happened ? Nigerians tends to call on the National coach to cap any player who happen to score one or two goals in their clubs. They are currently begging the coach to bring in Dessers whom he capped before but could not impress. Why, because every Nigerian is a coach and he is serious about it. No body is calling for Simy now because he not scoring like he was doing last season in Italy. What a tragedy for the Nigeria’s football.

“They are currently begging the coach to bring in Dessers whom he capped before but could not impress”.

Are you kidding me Edoman? Seriously? Dessers did not impress?

If I may ask you my lovely friend Edoman, how many minutes did Dessers play against Algeria?

Dessers that almost scored against Algeria was not impressed?

So, did you recall that it took Ighalo so long before he became a super star in the national team?

However, how many matches has Dessers played for Nigeria?

Have you watched the goal he scored yesterday? If not, please go and watch the highlight of the match on YouTube.

The way he scored that last minute goal was superb and top notch.

More so my lovely friend, we have been calling attention of Oga Rohr to consider Dessers as one of the best attackers for Eagles but it seems like the coach doesn’t know what he’s doing.

He have Dessers, Dennis and Kayode but that our coach is not interested in them but instead, he opted for Ighalo who have done is very best for Nigeria.

Two things the gaffer must do to improve Super Eagles before our next match, Nwakali should be giving a chance and Dessers must be included in the team not be because he just scored a goal yesterday but he is very deadly in front of goal.

I know you love Ighalo so much but we can not continue this way if we have to have a formidable team.
For me, Oga Rohr has passed his prime. All what he’s doing now is a business. That coach is doing a big business with NFF.

Did you read what Nwakueme’s brother said about Oga Rohr?

I will continue saying that we don’t have coaches in the Super Eagles.

If truly we have them, we shouldn’t be talking about Ighalo by now.

Super Eagles doesn’t have a play maker and the coaches are hunting for Ighalo.

I don’t think that is logical at all.

This is why the coach is recycling players.

Lastly, Dessers deserve another chance. God bless Nigeria!!!
