Donald Hopeful Of Open Qualification

Luke Donald admits he is aiming to qualify for the Open Championship next month at the Royal Portrush Golf Club. The 41-year-old, whose best result in the Open was a tie for fifth, in both 2009 and 2012, is currently hoping to qualify for one of the two spots left from the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Donald would be eligible to play in the major event should he finish in the top eight of the tournament, as it heads towards the final. Back injuries have hampered his progress in recent years, but the former world number one is confident he can finish the tournament well enough to play at Portrush.

“I’m very pleased,” he said following the conclusion of day two. ” I’m driving solidly, which is what I’ve been working on a lot. I could’ve gone even lower the last couple of days. “I’ve got my sights set for Sunday and I want to give myself a chance to qualify for the Open. Anything that creates a bit of momentum would be great. I’d love to be in the Open.”
