Done Deal: Etebo Completes Aris Thessaloniki Transfer

Greek Super League club Aris Thessaloniki FC have announced the signing of Oghenekaro Etebo on a permanent transfer, reports Completesports.com.

Etebo moved to the three-time Greek Super League champions from Sky Bet Championship club Stoke City.

The midfielder has spent time on loan at Getafe, Galatasaray and Watford since joining Stoke City on the eve of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

A long-term injury limited his appearance for Watford last season after a bright start.

Etebo started the Hornets opening six games of the season before he sustained the injury.

The 26-year-old was not registered by Stoke City for the 2022/23 season which prompted his decision to leave the club.

He has made 44 appearances for the Super Eagles with three goals to his name.

  • Congratulations brother…..I wish you all the best in your new club….But we still need to give exposure to Onyedika and Yusuf….. Watching the two of them play week in week out I see so much potential in them which SE must benefit from now before they move to bigger leagues…..5 years from now Onyedika and Yusuf will definitely be playing in a very top club in Europe but the same can not be said of Etebo……Am sorry for being too blunt but football is unforgiving because you are as good as your last match

Etebo is a Good player but made some mistakes in his club selection and had been unlucky with injuries.. for now let Yusuf and onyedika get their chances, you can’t tell if they will grab it, I will be surprise if the both of them do well at the same frequency and pace.. if they don’t or one of them doesn’t, we should not forget Etebo especially if he gets back to active club football.. I remember how Nigerian were clamoring for onyeka when he moved to the EPL and bonke but today only few is Talking about them.. congratulations Etebo,, I will miss his free kick

I have never understood why fans make such statements as ” He made some mistakes in his club selection”; like it is up to him alone. Etebo is a good player that has served his country well but the truth is he is not at that level to be courted by big clubs. Do you think post 2018 world cup, if Etebo had the opportunity of picking between an EPL team and Stoke City at Division 2 in England , he will opt for Stoke City? Your guess is as good as mine.

There is a reason why AC Milan wanted Onyedika and why club brugge eventually snapped him and were willing to cough out around 10 million euros (That is a staggering amount of money). Yusuf on the other hand is also widely coveted by many big clubs. I expect him to move on to a bigger club next season.

Look at the clubs Etebo has played for, Las palmas, Stoke City, Watford, and now thesalonika (Not even Olympiakos). The biggest club he ever played for was Galatasaray (On loan) and he was deemed surplus to requirement the following season. At Watford, he was greatly exposed and struggled to rack up games. Have we thought for a moment that he just might not be good enough? It is ok to score a free kick against sao tome but can he do it against quality opposition? That’s the big question.

Onyedika & Alhassan represent what the future holds for the eagles midfield but they need to grab it with both hands.

      • Chai…my man @Golden Child, God bless you. I just kept quiet since. cos i don’t want any problem with anyone. Nigerians love past glories they can advise paseiro to try out Okocha since he’s still performing in some novelty matches till date and he was the best in midfield position back then . Etebo was good back in 2016 Olympic, 2018 World Cup and his last outstanding match was against Ukraine back in 2019. The rest is history (pls don’t tell me he played well against São Tomé I beg).
Just like @Golden child said ,he was greatly exposed in premiership. I’m the type that watch some games because of some certain naija players in the team. I purposely followed Watford on 3 to 4 occasions because of Etebo then , I knew Ekong doesn’t play often. But I was so disappointed the guy was so stiff!!! It used to take him days to complete one 360. The coach was forced to substitute him and bench him the next game before he later got injured. Etebo was once the best with indidi but not anymore. Onyedika and Yusuf are coming to stay cos we’ve suffered a lot from even indidi’s continuous injuries. The guy used to get injured whenever we need him the most. I’ve been praying for replacements for those two for long.

  • Another result of the unnecessary over-hype of our players. Always hailed for doing the bearest minimum.

Etebo is a decent talent that has done no harm to National team chances but lots of goods. Everybody can not like the same players that is why some people will strangely dislike this unique box to box player that is also deadly on free kick. My country is strange and rating players.

Etebo will still be around, but I think he will gradually fade out by or after the next AFCON. He’s never going to play in the big leagues again unless something extraordinary happens in his club career over the next two years.

His experience will still be needed at this time as long as he’s active and fit. Apart from Onyedika and Yusuf, Kelechi Nwakali is also looking good to hopefully finally find his place in this team for the nearest future. We need to integrate Onyedika Yusuf and Nwakali into our midfield now.

I know some will talk about playing in the second division. In all honesty Nwakali has started this season on a forward trajectory. Obviously Iwobi and Ndidi are the mainstay but I see this trio becoming a fulcrum of a rebranded SuperEagles.

We failed to qualify for the WorldCup because we lack depth in our midfield and Eguavoen altering a line up that fought for a goalless draw in Kumasi by listening to bloggers masquerading as journalists and armchair critics doesn’t help matters spiced up with the bone head decision to sack Rohr just weeks to the AFCON brought us where we are today.

We need to strengthen our midfield options to be able to achieve glory with this generation of players. If our midfield is dominant then the wingers will flourish that’s the blueprint of Westerhoffs iconic SuperEagles and Keshi’s Eagles in 2013. Rohr’s team used it to qualify for the WorldCup in 2018. But since Mikel retired Iwobi and Ndidi’s unavailability with injuries and suspension cost us big time.

The future is looking good with the positive transfers of our players in the new season. Obviously we’re not in the caliber of England Spain Germany Brazil Argentina or even Portugal and Netherlands or Belgium therefore, we still have to complement our team with young players doing well in lower leagues.

A sizable number of our first eleven are now in the top five to top ten leagues in Europe which bolds well for a great future for the SuperEagles. If we can put our house in order I’m expecting the SuperEagles to win at least one of the next two AFCONS leading to the Mundial in the USA Mexico and Canada.

  • Thumbs up @Ayphillydegreat!
You have a good understanding of this game.
Even your previous and current points on Mr. Rohr whom I’m not a big fan of, has been made from an unbiased point of view.
Your recent contributions here are heart-warming.
Veering off topic a little bit, I understand that young Malcolm Ebiowei have been invited The England U20 youth team and have accepted the invitation. First of all, if that happens and we do lose him to England, I will blame Mr. Manu Garba for that.
On the other hand, if the boy goes to play for England at the U20 level at this time, fully aware that we seriously want him to play for us at the senior international level, ten I suggest that under no circumstance should The NFF try to convince him to switch to Nigeria in future. Same should apply to Jordan Tounaghai who is now languishing at Gent in Belgium. And I would suggest we call off the pursuit of Eberechi Eze as well. The kid seems happy to take us on what looks like a wild goose chase.
I’m aware our country is messed up in a lot of ways, but we still remain a country with a large population whose no.1 sport is soccer. We have enough talented footballers. All we need to do is to fish them out young, provide then with all the necessary training and support they need at the youth level and then make the invitation and selection on merit.
We should as a matter of principle stop begging some of these foreign-born players to accept us.
Let us try and do right by our own Nigerian players.
Afterall, charity, they say begins at home.

There is no need blaming anyone for losing Malcom. Anyone who is presented with the opportunity of representing the Nigerian Senior Football Team and opts for U20 England team does not deserve to be in the team. The question however is did Nigeria invite him for the friendlies against Algeria? if this is true then you can not blame the boy for agreeing to play for England u20s. Anyhow, we move!
