Dragons Confirm Griffiths Surgery

New Dragons signing Tom Griffiths has undergone surgery on an ankle injury and will miss the start of the new Pro14 season. The 23-year-old centre arrived at Rodney Parade from European and Premiership champions Saracens earlier in the summer, but he has now gone under the knife to correct a long-standing problem that the Dragons were aware of before they completed the transfer.

Dragons director of rugby Dean Ryan told the South Wales Argus: “It’s an injury we were aware of when we signed Tom and, following an assessment, the decision was made to have the operation so he can get back fully fit.” With the new Pro14 season not getting underway until the end of September, Griffiths is not expected to miss too much competitive action and Ryan is not concerned by the Englishman’s absence, as he has been signed with the region’s long-term future in mind.

“Tom is a long-term signing for us and somebody who we are excited to see develop in our environment over the coming years,” Ryan added. “I know he will now work diligently with our medical and strength and conditioning teams to get back to full fitness and we look forward to his return.”
