Eguavoen: How We ‘Tamed’ Mohamed Salah

Super Eagles head coach Austine Eguavoen has revealed how his side stopped Egypt captain Mohamed Salah in Tuesday night’s 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Group D clash, Completesports.com reports.

The Liverpool star failed to make much impact in the game with his side going down to a 1-0 defeat.

Much was expected from the forward following his superlative displays for Liverpool this season, but he was marked out of the game by the Super Eagles.

Eguavoen has now shed light on how his team tamed Salah in the game.

“Our main objevtive was to win the game, cut off Salah and keep the ball and we did all that,” Eguavoen said after the game at the Stade Roumde Adija, Garoua.

“We played direct and we also kept the ball.

“We will continue to approach each game as a cup final.”

Nigeria’s next game in the 2021 AFCON finals is against Sudan on Saturday.

  • No coach has been able to keep Mo Salah quiet, you did Coach, and even gave us what is today known as soccer lock down in football history. As we move towards Sudan, Congrats coach.

No one believes Salah could be locked down, I didn’t even. It was a great outing for the men.

  • What I cherish most about Eguavoen is his policy of Playing each game as if it’s the cup final.

    That’s the way to go.

    God bless Nigeria.

  • Please, anybody wey help me see Omo Naija tell him say afcon don start.

I have not seen his comment here on CS for weeks now.

    Hope all is well.

The Eagles played a great game yesterday, however the coach should have a serious talk with Chidera Ejike/Ejuke about team work. He doesn’t always have to go it alone there are nine other outfield players to combine with to achieve the end goal. He needs pass the ball.

Once again, great job Super Eagles.

  • Man u send agent to discuss with Eguaevon on assistant coaching job…..

    • Wat a good news.

@Dele, I read it as well. ManU said they were impressed with Eguavoen’s lock down philosophy and the tactical discipline of his charges. If the Sports Ministry didn’t respond quickly, we might be loosing the Super Eagles coach to one of the top5 teams. I heard Canadian national team has shown interest.

Another thing that will earn Eguavon more respect is taken over with just nothing more than 4 to 5 days training and the team was able to come up with fine tactics and strong cohesion, that’s wonderful. Eguavon has improved seriously, he’s 22 second century coach.

Eguavoen, you and ur boys did a great job during the match; I thank you all for that. But it’s not yet time to celebrate, there’s lots more work for the team. Scoring goals; you need to work on that. Finally, lifting the trophy is far more better for us. We are praying for you people, hopefully you will use it to make us happy, because we have been in pains largely to the maladministration we have been facing.
