Eguavoen Steps Down As Super Eagles Coach

Super Eagles interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen quit the post following the team’s exit from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, Completesports.com reports.

The former defender was appointed interim head coach of the team following the sacking of Gernot Rohr on the eve of the competition.

There were clamour for Eguavoen to get the job on a permanent basis following the Super Eagles impressive start in Cameroon.

The three-time champions however crashed out of the 2021 AFCON finals on Sunday going down to a 1-0 defeat against Tunisia.

“I’m the technical director of the NFF. I will go back to my job and allow the authorities to decide (who the next Super Eagles coach will be),” Eguavoen told the media after the media.

It remain to be seen whether the NFF will stick with Eguavoen or cement the appointment of Portuguese Jose Peseiro.

No! You must continue o o. You must take us to the world cup.. You can’t leave us now. You must finish what you started. LMFAO!.

    • He must not only step down from Super Eagles job. He has to be sacked as Head of NFF Technical Committee because it only shows not that he knows nothing and cannot move Nigerian football forward.
Double jeopardy for him and the other ex-internationals that supported him to get and prosecute this AFCON.

      • Marvins 2 years ago

but u guys were praising him after winning 3 matches

        • Ode, From the very first match. Go and check my posts on CSN.I congratulated Eguavoen for winning, but I said we need to improve our play style and use our central midfield as it was not connecting with the attackers.

I also pointed out that Aribo is not an effective playmaker and that he cant distribute balls.

Has all those predictions not come to pass now

      • Dondada 2 years ago

Absolutely spot on bro..This coach got no clue about any tactical awareness..Zero knowledge of Ny football organizatuon..The first 3 matches we won were just by share quality of the players and nothing else..i saw this coming.

  • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

Yes @Ben If they don’t want us to continue our sidon dey look, LMAO! Let him vacate the technical role. As a matter of fact we need a total overhauling. Let picknic and his gang leave the glass house.

  • Amedu Ukpoli 2 years ago

That is a good thing for Eguavoen to have stepped down. The best thing the NFF should do is to stick with Eguavoen if we must qualify for the World cup.

  • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

LMFAO! But truely like they say failure has no friend. LMFAO! Where are all those Antelopes that use to make this man head to swell and make him feel like Alex Ferguson. LMFAO! They are nowhere to be found. Hiding their brainless head in shame. LMFAO!

I supported rohr and was among those that saw this coming. Omo9ja said we will see total football, jimmyball said finishing 3rd wasn’t a big deal and with our own, we would win it. We played against a depleted Tunisian side whose coach wasn’t available, a side that manage to get to the knock out stages by luck. If this was rohr in charge, everybody would talk
I’m not happy that we left quite early. The said reality is that we still won’t address the main issue-the corrupt NFF board led by pinnick. A coach that failed woefully with Venezuela would now be made our coach. Amaju would still be in charge and nothing would happen
We said, if you were gonna fire rohr, get someone better than him. That fell on deaf ears
By the way, we know where rohr left us in FIFA rankings, let’s see how the new rankings would look like since coming 3rd and rising in our rankings isn’t a big deal
If you guys think Ghana match would be a walk in the park, you guys would be shocked

  • Dr. Drey 2 years ago

Of what use is a technical director who exposes his tactics to the world on youtube, goes to the tournament without a plan B, open his mouth in a world press conference to say he cannot change tactics in the middle of a tournament and “has not been watching Nigeria’s current most prolific striker in the world”

Even the homebased he claims to be monitoring, he depended on friends and agents to name a squad of players to be called up for the friendly vs mexico.

Nigerian football wouldn’t fare a tad worse if the TD seat is vacant. He should be relieved of the job and let competent hands like Seyi Olofinjana who can even interview the interviewers take the seat.

This one is yet another overrated member of the overrated 94 sqaud. Who can hardly get decent coaching jobs unless the NFF shoves one at them.

    • Mr. Nice 2 years ago

I think one major problem we have as a people is that we are yet to recover from the 1994 golden generation era, we always unconsciously insist that both the coaches and players of any era must replicate the form of that feat, it is so terrible that even when a coach is achieving decent results with a his own style of play we still see him as a failure until he replicate the 94 era style of play now popularly known as Nigerian style of play, if we don’t change our mindset we will continue to go round in circles and always returning to the drawing board.

Bro you know what you are talking about..He is absolutely clueless

  • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

But CSN should help this man ministry. Change this picture na. He looks like an Almajeri here. LMFAO!

And please tell him to return that award. Rewrite something on it and give it to the Tunisian coach. What a game plan the Tunisian coach came up with and it worked!!

Seriously I’m still in shock with the kind of sub a man that called himself a coach made yesterday.

How can a coach that is looking for a goal take off two of his strikers at the same time in match that you are looking for a goal? Rorh can not make this kind of mistake in a match even if he’s winning.

How can a coach be exposing his tactics to the opponent? when you know you don’t have a plan B. Please my fellow forumite do we now see the reason why Oyibo is better than us? You always speak against Rorh that he doesn’t boost the confidence of the players with the kind of things he always say at the press conference, but I want to ask do you really know what he always say to them on the dressing room?

Seriously I’m not a fan of Rorh but I must tell us the truth, that man is the highest thing that has happened to Nigerian football but politics won’t allow us to say the truth.
      God bless Nigeria

It’s unbelievable that Nigeria couldn’t make it past round of 16.. when last did this happen.. Nigerian have a share of the blame.. it would be in history that they sack their coach at the eve of a tournament only to get knocked out at the round of 16.
Many ex internationals warned us, past administrator warned us, other nations warned us.. you don’t sack a coach at the eve to a major tournament like the Afcon.. we did this in the past and saw the results ,do not repeat previous errors yet Nigerians and those foolish nff chiefs refused to learn.. they are super humans.. the fans can’t do them anything.. so they take whatever decision that pleases them.. hope we learn from this.

  • Now you can Come out of hiding thank God we all thought you were sick

    • JimmyBall 2 years ago

Hahaha… @Kunle. @Dr.Drey has been doing fasting and prayers untop Gernot Rohr sack for Super Eagles and Eguaveon to fail so that he can rejoice o… He is really out of hiding… Watch this space today and see lecture to forumites from him. Lol…

      • Dennis 2 years ago

We finally failed with our own. Let it be known that this result is way more accepted than coming 3rd according to you @jimmyball. The assistant coach of Tunisia outsmarted a tactical god. unbelievable. We had Ndah, Nwakali, olayinka, umar, awoniyi and all the players you demanded for but couldn’t achieve what a ‘failure’ like rohr achieved. FIFA ranking isn’t a big deal so let us patiently wait for the latest rankings. We qualified with ease to the World Cup so let us do so against Ghana

        • JimmyBall 2 years ago

@Dennis go and knock Austin Okocha who kept bashing Eguaveon on Super Sport to play an Alex Iwobi who has become confused in football… You are criticisng Ndah, Nwakali and Olayinka. How many ball them kick? Nwakali did well and Olayinka also… no be the Iwobi wey enter same time with Olayinka suppose the give balls to am? Before person say Jack Robinson oga numberdoya… lol, Nigeria maradona Iwobi don go play monkey ball… Iwobi is suppose to be a professional hairstylist not a footballer… he loves his hairstyle more than working hard and putting in extra work to learn his craft…

          • Dennis 2 years ago

@jimmyball you can spew all the rubbish you want but we came 3rd in the last AFCON and came what in this AFCON? That’s progress. Let us do what with our own?

  • Babs Imoni 2 years ago

If indeed the NFF is serious and since we have all agreed on a domestic coach, Eguavoen should be given 4 years contract to rebuild the team, you don’t keep changing your personnels every time, if you do, the output will always go bad.

    • Saturday 2 years ago

I am very surprised some people were expecting too much. The 2 weeks given Eguavoen was too short. Let’s wait and see who the football federation would appointment for another 2 weeks.

  • Chudynak 2 years ago

Good to hear that the interim coach has stepped aside as he did not manage the successes of the team at the group stage. Moreover, his team was weak and uninspiring, you do not know a good team when they win because they always go ahead first but you know a good team when they are able to come back and win after being scored first

    • Like what happened against Cameroon last afcons when Nigeria came back twice to won the match but the same man was said not to have been good enough out of sentiment that it must be our own. They have failed with their own now no big deal just feel for Egu because the corrupt NFF officials and over Sabi fans spoil hiqs CV with this dismal outing nobody will ever remember he played good football and got out of AFCONS in second round.

  • Greenturf 2 years ago

Gradually it will get to sink in the huge mistake we made sacking a coach that was taking us to the pinnacle a great level of success but we think it weren’t good enough sadly. Now we know better.
We were going through an imposing height playing and winning important games qualifying for tournaments with games to spare with a tactical astute coach but we maliciously kicked him out thinking we can do much better with anyone but him now the reality of that hideous stony-hearted decision is beginning to sink in.
For the very first time I wasn’t really bothered with Nigeria getting thrown out of a major competition normally I should be gutted but this time around I wasn’t because I care more how people are treated.
Everyone whether foreigner or indigene should be loved the same ways we are rightly treated for those of us in the diaspora.
Rohr is a good man a good tactician but was treated with contempt.
I do wish Nigeria well as we play Ghana but if we fail to qualify I won’t be bothered.
I do hope in the future we would start learning from history and stop pressing self destructive buttons.
Dare Sunday especially and his cohort Pinnick caused millions of Nigerians a heartbreak and should vacate their positions because the decision they took were weird and not of national interest.
I’m afraid we can only continue to go on the downward slope with people like that in power.

May God bless Nigeria with visionary leadership.

    • Mahmud Shuaib 2 years ago

@GREENTURF, Am shocked reading you call ROHR an astute TACTICALLY sound coach. Pls provide his over 30 years scorecard to drive your point home!

Secondly, you claimed a good man was treated with CONTEMPT. Are you kidding me bro? After how many years at the saddle pls? Was KESHI a bad man?’Pls what do you have to say about him?’i cant recall you say glowing things about him on this forum or the old Kick Off when after winning AFCON and playing in the second round of the WC (something ROHR NEVER managed) he was being owed salaries and allowances and treated with disdain. And all these happened in less than 3 years.

If NIGERIA treated a GOOD MAN who spent 5+ years and NEVER had a first 11 with CONTEMPT, please what should we say about little NIGER, BURKINA FASA or GABON who never allowed him tinker them for up to 3 years before he was booted out??? Racist? Wicked???

We will never achieve anything with ROHR even if we make him the ALEX FERGUSON of SE. Period! He DOESN’T have it anymore. If he’s that good…WATFORD just sacked RANIERI..They should ring up the TACTICALLY SOUND GOOD MAN. Ghana too has no coach. His mame should be top on THEIR list. In fact it will be criminal and disrespectful on their part if THEY SHORTLIST him rather than go CAP-IN-HAND to beg the great tactical magician. Lol!

EGUAVOEN as bad as we think he is, had just 4 days of FULL training sessions with the squad and was able to play more cohesive, more vibrant, more eye catching football than ROHR has played in the last 2 years plus!

We have no respect for local coaches thats all. WESTERHOFF had 5 years to do what he had in his head to do

ROHR had 5 years + to all exhibit all he’s got in his COACHING repertoire

EGUAVOEN only had less than a week and because we got knocked out in the second round, EVERYONE is screaming CRUCIFY HIM CRUCIFY HIM

Give him 3 years contract. Pay him 50% of what you paid ROHR. Allow him free hand like ROHR had. Then we can come back here and compare notes!

  • We lost Because we had 6 Key players out will always struggle. A team wasting space on Musa as captain which all of una @Monkey Post and his cohorts supported. Musa didn’t even kick a ball the whole torunament but una dey talk say make him come camp to dey do Gospel singing and Choir leader Lol chai!!! oya una don see result na .

Mediocre will always give Mediocre result PERIOD!!! you forced Eguavoen hand to take Musa to Afocn As Captain when the space can be used for a AFCON specialist Victor Moses. Nothing Moses cannot do to that Tunisia We played Yesterday with Osibobo in there to recieve dose crosses. But @Monkey Post will open his yeye mouth and blaim Eguavoen.. Chai I don tire for dis my yeye people sef.

It is simple Victor Moses, Victor Osimhen, Emmanuel Dennis, Calvin Bassey, Ademola Lookman and Leon Balogun. these players were really missed and I don’t care what anybody says. Only Victor Moses, Victor Osimhen and Emmanuel Dennis will tear Tunisa apart take it or leave it. Victor Moses is the rightful experience And Wilfred Ndidi is the rightful Captain PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is simple Victor Moses, Victor Osimhen (i.e Double Vic)

    • MONKEY POST 2 years ago

LMFAO! So it was Ahmed Musa that ask your clueless coach not to switch pattern from his predictable one styled pattern wing play to something more direct or bad as e switch it to the the wing of chukwueze. LMFAO! Abeg look for other excuse… LMFAO!

  • If Nigeria will still not make it beyond round of sixteen in this coming world cup.

I think we don’t deserve to qualify. Let us also bear that one too in mind.

We should also stop imposing players on coach. Many of those players don’t live up to expectations.

Football has it stand today, a coach needs to be very dynamics and learn how to quickly switch pattern when your chosen tactics fails during a game.

  • Chinenye 2 years ago

Sacking Rhor was the best option still.

Tunisia really watched our clips and knew our best players so far in the tournament. Little wonder they didn’t allow they a sniff of the ball

Simon should improve on his deliveries. We need Victor Moses back in the team
Okoye shouldn’t be our first choice anymore

Sadiq was our best player last night

    • Dr Banks 2 years ago

@Chinenye, what do you know about football, coaching, administration, tactics and team selections?

Sacking Rohr was the best options? No wonder you got rewarded with a Round of 16 exit.
How can sacking a coach who is delivering on his promise and target be regarded as the best option? What about the timing? You think football is just about dribbling and running around the pitch only? Technicalities and tactical discipline is the onus of a winning team and not just dribbling with no end result.

To what end does sacking Rohr benefit you now, getting booted out in the round of 16 in AFCON is the worst thing that could happen to a big nation like Nigeria with all our array of stars. We were celebrating to high heavens when we played a weak Egyptian team who struggled so far to score 1 goal each against minnows like Sudan and EG and thought SE has arrived, beating Sudan and EG in this tournament should be a bread and butter thing to Nigeria but our ego soared so high that we forgot that there’s still a long huddle ahead to reach our goal

We all are clamouring that Tunisia clipped our wings and never allowed Simon to play but same Simon had a clear chance to score but hit a tame short at the GK.

Sadiq had 3 clear chances but was wayward in his execution and fluffed the lines and I hear you people saying he was the best player on the pitch yesterday. Or do we now give awards to the best misser of goals? Tell me how many clear chance did Tunisia has to score yesterday? But they were clinical when presented with the opportunity offered them while your players were wasteful. Ndidi alone has 2 great chances to hit the ball the way Msakni did but always wide of target. No wonder bigger teams are not keen on pricing him away from Leicester

The boys were simply too carried away by all the praises showered on them and the coaches made wrong calls on selection and tactics on the b=night

  • Omo9ja 2 years ago

Again, you rip what you sow. I don’t follow people blindly. I have warned you before the tournament. Look at the way Oga Rohr followers are mocking you and doing the talking now.

You tarnished your image eventually because of corruption (dodo). You listened to Salisu Yusuf and Aigbogun advices and you saw the results.

I saw this coming and I said it here categorically that I wasn’t satisfied with the final Afcon list you submitted to CAF.

Why did you allow NFF to choose for you? You were in charge and definitely we would call your name when things were not going well.

Why did you left out Dessers in that team? This question should be treated.

Why did you left out Adeleye, Osagwe, Bassey, Ajiboye, Ejaria and Nwobodo on your list and invited Ighalo, Akpeyi, John Noble and Shehu? NFF lied that Lookman wasn’t clear from FIFA yet.

I can’t pity you and you have letting yourself down big time. I am not Oga Rohr followers that failed to tell Mr. Rohr the bitter truth.

You wasted a slot for Ighalo while Dessers was in line to replace him. You took four golies to Afcon and you was struggling to switch tactics against Tunisia because you did not selected the right players to represent Nigeria. You got it wrong Mr. No nonsense.

NFF should allow our ex players to continue the process. Eguavoen, Amunike, Egbo, Finidi George, Peter Rufai and Enyeama are great for the job. No room for foriegn coaches. God bless Nigeria!!!

At the end of the day rorh is gone. Are this not the same players he would have paraded at the tournament. Let us hear word abeg, with 2 weeks to assemble this players together for me the coach tried. Yes we might all be pained, but we saw a different brand to our football. Except you rorh asslickers want to lie, every pundit and fans loved the style of the eagles. So for me eguaveon tried his best, luck was just not on our side. Iwobi was just over anxious to do something and lost his brain brain coming in.

  • Oakfield 2 years ago

Wouldn’t it have been better to play boring football and get results than play tiki taka football and get knocked out when it mattered most. Yesterday’s match exposed egus gross technical deficiencies. The reason why we outsmarted the Egyptians was bcs we Gave them that element of surprise having (the Egyptians) studied our last matches under rohr. They felt is was still gonna be same strategy and tactics but were disappointed them by using a whole new tactics used by egu- wing play tactics. It is expected that, having used such tactics in the group stages and already bearing in mind the fact that the tunisians might have thoroughly studied our main tactics and playing pattern, mr egu should have smartly changed his tactics whilst giving them that element of surprise but he didn’t unfortunately. We played tiki taka football and crashed out like a boen 777. If this is the kind of technical director we have, then, we have a big problem. @jimmyball, omo9ja and co, hope you are now happy how we have crashed out so early before the quarter finals with our own. I bet you, rohr would have at least taken us to the finals this time around but wickedness and greed no gree una to leave him work. This is just the beginning.

    • Omo9ja 2 years ago

Welcome back @Oakfield. Long time. Now you are happy?

You have a right to say whatever you want but the fact still remains the same. Oga Rohr deserves to be fired period.

Coach Eguavoen gotten his tactics in yesterday match wrong due to his tactics and the players he took to the Afcon.

If he can invite players based on current form and if NFF can have Amunike, Egbo, Finidi George, Peter Rufai and Enyeama with Eguavoen then we are good to go.

Oga Rohr has been struggling for a while long story short, go back and watch his last two matches and tell me if he deserves to stay with the team.

I will advise NFF to send Eguavoen to a refresher course same way NFF wanted to do with Oga Rohr then because coach Eguavoen is better than Oga Rohr and I will say no to hire a foreign coach. Our own should continue period. God bless Nigeria!!!

      • Mr. Nice 2 years ago

Is it the same Amunike that cannot get a good coaching job, Finidi George that is getting the beating black and blue in the NPFL, Enyeama that has no record of coaching etc that you want to assemble to coach the super eagles. Are you not tired of sounding stupid all the time? Even if your brain is not aware of what your fingers are typing something somewhere in you should be responsible enough to caution it ké….. Abeg park one place o jare.

  • Marvelous 2 years ago

Rohr would have been at the finals with his rigid football, but yet purpose driven. Now tiki taka can’t cross common round of 16.

  • There is no difference between this one and Omo9ja there comments is always off the mark. Imagine making reference to Victor Mosses and those players who were not in the competition. We had 27 good players how did we utilize them? Lubbish

  • Dr Banks 2 years ago

My brother, all I keep reading was how Tunisians studied our game plan and countered it to render us toothless. What was the role of our 9 consortium of coaches? Why was none of them given the test of studying the Tunisians too so we can outwit them. Only thing we keep hearing is that 12 of their players are out due to Covid-19 but no news on the supposed impacts these missing players could have on the match

  • DeSTAR 2 years ago

@Omo9ja I have warned you never to tag Eguafon with the undeserved Mr No Nonsense; as I have said when he was appointed that Eguafon himself is Mr Yes-Man and an upgraded local version of the clueless Rohr that spent almost 6 years without direction and became business man in players call up , and being manipulated also by his business partner NFF.

Though technically Eguafon is ahead of the erstwhile Belmadi’s trainee Rohr , also having an edge over Rohr in terms of putting confidence in his players, unlike Rohr that would have written off his players ahead of game against opponents that have players in Man City , LiV etc as he always did to the likes of Algerian Coach Belmadi ( now we can see how bad Rohr was technical wise ; the same Belmadi that tutored Oga Rohr in 2019 , repeated it again 3 years later , was himself defeated by Coaches that have upped their tactics) .

    @Omo9ja , thank God for your sincerity unlike Oga Rohr’s blind followers; has Eguafon not proved me right that he was an upgraded local version of Rohr ;

    Only a look alike local version or Rohr would have allowed corrupt call up poor John Noble to waste a space in his team ( as John Noble was corruptly forced on Rohr so also Eguafon just to mentioned one ) ;

Oga Rohr was owed several months of accumulated salaries; he suddenly remembered oil rich retired Ronaldo in Igahalo, and when Igahalo totally flopped in his competitive game for SE (Rohr suddenly became solicitor begging with silly excuse ) ; when Eguafon was told by NFF that he would not entitled to Rohr’s salary but the peanuts of 2 million Naira which only God knows when last he was paid ; Eguafon remained quiet (just like Oga Rohr) but began to cry for the returned of the retired Igahalo (who in his right nose of Eguafon as Technical Director in Lagos failed woeful in his last game) , as Rohr also did ( I did warned then, that Eguafon was not crying over Igahalo because of football reason but for Igahalo rich salary that can help him; (few days later Amaju Fraud Pinnick came out to reveal that Eguafon would only be entitled to just allowance )

All said and done , bad officiating marred SE progress, coupled with the fact that we don’t have bench.

Nevertheless , I will still prefer Eguafon is allowed to continue, he played 5 games winning 4 and loosing to bad officiating is not a disastrous result for a coach that pick up job 3 weeks to a tournament and without entitlement to salary ( I can bet it , if the corrupt Amaju had paid Eguafon even half of Rohr salary after the sack , I am sure Eguafon wouldn’t have wasted that slot for Dessers and Amoo ) , than beginning another Journey with Paserio or whatever he called himself.

The likes of Siasia is the only Mr No Nonsense that can take on NFF but unfortunately, Siasia could not get help from his enemy NFF , while bribe taker Salisu is continue where he left

At least Rohr was Belmadi’s trainee…..LMAOoooo. Please can someone remind us the name of the ASSISTANT COACH of the depleted Tunisian team that trained 9 of the best technical hands in Nigeria (including 5 exinternationals) LMAOOoooo.

So it was Eguavoen’s salary that sent NIGERIA with all our stars out of AFCON in R16….??? LMAOOooooo

I thought you said bronze medal was disgraceful……I thought you said any coach apart from Rohr can win the AFCON in 2 weeks….LMAOOooo.

You guyz aint seeing anything yet. Just wait till end of March and Nigeria doesnt have a ticket to Qatar, you will see hell fire in 3D. All these sewage you are vomiting all over the place, you will lap them all up with your own tongue by the time you are done with. Better go and commence serious dry fasting and prayers

      Bunch of regressives.

Since bronze medal after back-to-back non qualification was a failure, I hope you and your herd of charlatans are enjoying your R16 success now…..LMAOooooo.

At least you won the best coach of the group stages trophy….LMAOOoooo.

@Dr Drey ; yes I stand with Eguafon even though I am not his fan but he is super better than your clueless Rohr who had 2 years to prepare SE for solid 2 years with $30k uninterrupted salary.

When Eguafon had little time in the past to prepare SE for Afcon with unpaid salary he equally got shameful bronze medal as Oga Rohr.

Eguafon with his great work won many fans to his side ; a team and coach that was rated the best in the first rounds is no a little recognition, did your clueless Rohr ever got such recognition in his entire 6 years waste ?

Please wait until Eguafon is defeated second time by the same coach as the Belmadi’s trainee Oga Rohr was schooled the rudimentary of football by a local coach Belmadi in 2019 and repeated it again 3 years later which proved that Rohr never made attempt to upgrade himself.

Algerian coach Belmadi that was tutoring your clueless Rohr was himself sent packing in the first round , that is to tell you that were Rohr to be in charge of SE ; the team wouldn’t have survived 1st round elimination just as Ghana team

He is super better and could not beat an understrength Tunisian side. Same side Rohr flogged with their full squad last time.

And Senegal scored a 9 man Capr Verde even tho their player got tripped in the build up to the goal and this is sad. Very sad.
