Legendary Brazilian forward Rivaldo has reacted to comparisons between former teammate Roberto Carlos and England left-back Luke Shaw, following the laters impressive performance at this year’s Euros.
Shaw has been one of the best full-backs at the tournament, registering three assists as England have reached their first major final since the World Cup final in 1966.
His performances have seen him installed as the first-choice left-back under Gareth Southgate despite missing out on selection in the first game and even seen him compared to the legendary Roberto Carlos.
But while England have been mightily impressive in their run to the final, it is the 25-year-old who has caught the eye of 2002 World Cup and Ballon d’Or winner Rivaldo during the tournament.

Speaking to Betfair, for whom he is an ambassador, Rivaldo said: “Some press and fans are starting to compare Luke Shaw to Brazilian Roberto Carlos, but I always find it tough to compare players, especially when we talk about one of the greatest left backs ever.
“Roberto Carlos was the second best player in the world in 1997, so, perhaps it isn’t fair to make such comparisons, anyway, what I can say about Shaw is that he is doing a great job for the English team.
“He is very quick and powerful going forward and crosses very well, so, he is becoming a very complete left back capable of doing all the important functions of that position.”
England are yet to concede in open play during the tournament and Shaw’s defensive capabilities have been a big part of that, as well as his relationship with fellow Manchester United star Harry Maguire in the back line.
The two linked up during the 4-0 quarter-final win over Ukraine, with Shaw crossing for Maguire to head in the second goal of the game.
Shaw is expected to start for Southgate’s side when they take on Italy in the final on Sunday night at Wembley Stadium, looking to become European champions for the first time ever.
